Looking for barrels that are suitable for centerfire cartridges firing naked (unpatched) balls.

Seems Owen is the right maker?

20,12 and 10 gauge barrels? Sounds like you have quite a project in mind.

The bore and groove diameters will be determined by the size of your shells and the inside diameter of the shells. You’ll want the ball to be .010" over groove diameter, but that ball has to go inside a shell. The grooves should be about .008" deep.
Let look at a 12 bore as an example. Let’s say you have some paper shells that will take a .720 ball. The ball will have to be .101" over GROOVE diameter, so the barrel would have to be .710 at the grooves. The lands come up .008" all around, so that equals .016" total which is subtracted from .710. That means your bore would be .694" before rifling, and .710" in the grooves after rifling
To build a gun correctly you have to get all the math right going into the job.

OR

You can use any good rifled barrels you like IF you can then make your own shells. The same formula works. You simply make a ball .010" over groove diameter, then make your shells to accept that ball, and then make a reamer to cut your chamber to fit the shells you made. The reamer should be about .004" over shell size to allow for expansion and contraction when the gun is fired.

If we look at the 12, looking for something that might take a .735 round ball from a current plastic case. 0.735 fits modern plastic, I've checked. I'd be loading too.

If that's the size you'd like to try, I'd recomend Owen or Hoyt. Talk to them and see what they can do for you.

Last barrel I had made by Bauska(no longer around). It is a 20ga with a 60-70 twist. I think that it was the minimum his machine would cut. I had the bore and groove cut in relation to what was posted above.
I think that the tightest ball that would fit in a 20ga plastic case was .725 and it was bored .715 with the full size groove.
I was hoping that it would shoot round balls adequately and never got around to them.
Full bore slugs shot best with the 7/8oz 3" Brenekee shooting into 2.5" or so at 100 and the similar lightfield into an inch less.
If the slugs weren't available I would certainly shoot the rb ammo as it is probably better in nearly every respect.

Good shooting
Tom
