Boys, got back from Zim, a couple weeks ago. My son and I went on a DG safari. We both used Ruger no. 1s, 375 H&H mags. Ammo was Hornady 300 gr. DGX and DGS. My son used factory loads, and I used handloads with the same bullets. We hunted with Martin Pieters Safaris, in the Omay North. Our ph was Scott Bailey, and he was absolutely fabulous. He and his cohort, Mike Blignaut, absolutely made the trip. Our hunt was all about fun, experiences, and adventure. We sure got all three! Here are a few pics from the hunt.

We hunted cow cape buff, hippo, and tuskless elephant. Nothing like hunting 2x1 with your son! Here are a few wildlife pics. Hope you enjoy them.

Big vondu[catfish] my son caught.

Well done Maddog.
I have hunted Africa twice with my father, they are and will be some of my fondest memories.

Fantastic stuff Maddog, great photos and those smiles say heaps too.
One day I also plan to do something like your hunt with my two sons.
It’s excellent to see the Ruger No.1 being used for dangerous game. If one is proficient with it, and has confidence in it (as you two obviously do ), the No.1 makes a great hunting rifle for most occasions.

I should add, that the DGX and DGS Hornady bullets worked perfectly, resulting in three of the four animals taken, were basically 1 shot kills. Very pleased with the no. 1s as well. Here is some pics of our camp, and other scenery.

Hope you enjoy them.

I've stayed in that camp. Had the third/last hut down from yours.
There used to be some steel or iron artworks near the pool when I was there.
Thanks for sharing your photos.
I want to hunt a cape buff cow too myself one day.
Like the use of the single shots too.

Ha ha, I remember years ago people getting castigated on AR for even suggesting hunting DG with a single shot.
Don't know how all the old-times in black powder days most with single shots survived to write their books.

John, the iron artworks are still there. Who were you hunting with, when you were there?
As far as the single shots are concerned, I like hunting with unusual guns. When we hunted the limpopo, in 2008, I took a 45-70 guide gun and got seven head of plains game. So I thought using a Ruger no.1 was appropriate for my DG hunt. It IS kinda fun to give some of the boys on other forums, epileptic seizures over firearm choices.....

Ben, I know you hunt with a 450/400 NE 3", in a Ruger no. 1. I HAD one of those, 2 yrs. ago, intending to use it, on this hunt. Then, I lost my job and was out of work for 10 months, so I sold it to a gun writer, here in the states. When I got back to work, and my son and I made the committment for this hunt, I [we] both bought 375 H&Hs for this safari. I love the 375, but have thought several times how cool it would have been to have used the 450/400 NE.....

I hunted there in 2006 with Nengasha Safaris, the PH was Paul Frodsham, for a couple of cow elephants. There were three outfitters using the concession at the time, and the concession was owned by Butch Walker - Bulembi Safaris. I believe Martin Pieters took over from Butch Walker since then.

Great come-back from having the wolf at the door, Sir. And so much the better for sharing the hunt with your son. I love hunting with family; very special, indeed. Do you see another .450/.400 3" NE in your future? Cheers, Ben

Ben, probably not. It doesn't have much application, here in the states, unlike the 375. Also, brass and bullets are much more limited, compared to the 375. Still closing in on the eles, to 16-18 yds., it would have been cool to.........

An ele hunt like your's and John's is my dream! It is hard to find a better all-rounder than the .375H&H, even though I don't have one in the stable (I have used a friend's to shoot a few animals, and it is sweet).

You have a perfect rifle in your gun rack for hunting elephant.

I agree totally with John. That 450/400 NE would be THE ticket for elephant, hippo, and cape buff. If I would have still had mine, it would have been going, rather than the 375.

When I said 1 shot kills, that didn't include "paying the insurance. In other words, when the critter was down, you shot him again. The "dead ones" can kill you! . The only one that took multiple shots, was the hippo. My son hit him about 2" low. He opened his big ole mouth, swapped ends, and headed down the shore line. Scott, our ph, said that if Dan[my son] didn't drop him on the 1st shot, he'd have to back him, because it was close to the water, close to the village, and close to dark. Dan said ok. Dan fired, then Scott fired, then Dan fired again. Scott had a misfire, on his 2 nd shot. The bull stopped at the water's edge. Dan planted a solid in the ole boy's head, and he went down in a shower of water. It was a sight to behold!
When I shot the tuskless ele, the 1st shot had her done in. Scott didn't back me up, because he knew I'd shot her right. Unfortunately, my son didn't hear the conversation, and ducked outside the ph, and put a shot into her. It was all good. I had told him, that if I hit the ele, and she's still moving, back me up. She crashed, as he was shooting! I gave him a big hug. That's my boy!
The ruger no. 1s did a great job, as did the hornady DGS and DGX. Ya couldn't ask for more....

Thanks for sharing this greate trip with us! I wonder if you would care to inform us some more details about what you said at the end. I quote: Scott had a misfire, on his 2 nd shot. Was there a problem with the amunition, the rifle, or did Scott something wrong?

Scott did absolutely nothing wrong. The round he had in the chamber had a primer failure.
