There used to be some steel or iron artworks near the pool when I was there.

Ha ha, I remember years ago people getting castigated on AR for even suggesting hunting DG with a single shot.

Don't know how all the old-times in black powder days most with single shots survived to write their books.

As far as the single shots are concerned, I like hunting with unusual guns. When we hunted the limpopo, in 2008, I took a 45-70 guide gun and got seven head of plains game. So I thought using a Ruger no.1 was appropriate for my DG hunt. It IS kinda fun to give some of the boys on other forums, epileptic seizures over firearm choices.....

I hunted there in 2006 with Nengasha Safaris, the PH was Paul Frodsham, for a couple of cow elephants. There were three outfitters using the concession at the time, and the concession was owned by Butch Walker - Bulembi Safaris. I believe Martin Pieters took over from Butch Walker since then.

An ele hunt like your's and John's is my dream! It is hard to find a better all-rounder than the .375H&H, even though I don't have one in the stable (I have used a friend's to shoot a few animals, and it is sweet).

When I said 1 shot kills, that didn't include "paying the insurance. In other words, when the critter was down, you shot him again. The "dead ones" can kill you! . The only one that took multiple shots, was the hippo. My son hit him about 2" low. He opened his big ole mouth, swapped ends, and headed down the shore line. Scott, our ph, said that if Dan[my son] didn't drop him on the 1st shot, he'd have to back him, because it was close to the water, close to the village, and close to dark. Dan said ok. Dan fired, then Scott fired, then Dan fired again. Scott had a misfire, on his 2 nd shot. The bull stopped at the water's edge. Dan planted a solid in the ole boy's head, and he went down in a shower of water. It was a sight to behold!


When I shot the tuskless ele, the 1st shot had her done in. Scott didn't back me up, because he knew I'd shot her right. Unfortunately, my son didn't hear the conversation, and ducked outside the ph, and put a shot into her. It was all good. I had told him, that if I hit the ele, and she's still moving, back me up. She crashed, as he was shooting! I gave him a big hug. That's my boy!

The ruger no. 1s did a great job, as did the hornady DGS and DGX. Ya couldn't ask for more....
