The ventilated recoil pad is certainly a recent add-on.
Have a close look under action and barrel and under the magazine floorplate release lever. I am sure you will find the tiny ESHA stamp. All these "Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" prewar bolt-actions were built for Brenneke by Schmidt & Habermann, Suhl. Old Wilhelm never was a gunsmith himself, but was apprenticed to a bookseller.

Nice rifle. The handguard is interesting on a non-military rifle.

Speed show some similar rifles in his books, complete with handguard. Evidently this was a fairly common feature of this model/type.

I can't see the pic well enough to see how the handguard is held on at the rear. Is there a cuff around the barrel for it to slip into? These pics are making me want to have one made!
