From the lower right corner of page 554, dated 02 September 1941

Captain White deposited these in 1932 and never reclaimed them - I wonder what fate befell him?

Looking at the other issues back in 1906, you can see the types and calibers of firearms returned to Mombasa by Akeley and W.D.M. Bell (pages 20 & 23)
Fun reading anyway. Bell had just two 303 single barrel rifles.

Fun reading indeed - you can searching all issues (check out this one on Mauser http://www.google.com/search?tbo=p&tbm=bks&q=Mauser&tbs=,bkt:m,bkms:1168684103302644747 ). The returns come in two flavors - tax receipts for weapons and registrations (which *generally* have the serial numbers).
If you've got a rifle that you suspect might have come 'out of Africa', it's worth the time poking around and potentially finding the name of one of the old owners.
