Evaluation of this Westley Richards .318 double?
      #187893 - 13/08/11 06:09 PM

As written in earlier posts a friend of mine have a Westley Richards double rifle in .318WR.

The rifle where made in 1909 and is chambered for a square shouldered .318WR cartridge. Up until the 90īs the owner was advised by WR to just use original .318WR cartridges, but was recently informed by WR not to use them as they do not meet the chamber dimensions. Thus, this rifle is depended upon custom dies to make cartridges who safely can be used. This is a bit to much frills for the owner, so he now consider selling the rifle and wonder what evaluation he should set when selling it. Could any of you guys help my friend with a evaluation estimate?

Hereīs some pictures of the rifle:

Does 14,000$ sound like a reasonable estimate or is that figure way off? I know its hard to give a good answer just by looking at some pictures though...

What are the bores like ?

Is it an Ejector or an Extractor ?

It looks like a Boxlock, not a WR Droplock but just ant to confirm it is a Boxlock.

And are you talking US$ ?

Who, what came up with $14,000 ?

At $14k, I'd buy it anyway.

Custom dies are not a problem, a number of DR's have slightly funny chambers.

Ejector & boxlock

I dont have the experience or know how to judge the bores properly though:/

I was talking US$ as suggested by the owner.

Looks OK to me, I'd buy I for $14k if it was offered to me.

WR 318's don't come along that often.

Good luck.

Bores
- nice shiny, sharp rifling, no pitting or darkening at the throat OR
- Nice shiny with darkening at the throat but good rifling along OR
- Worn with darkening at the throat and along, worn rifling
- worn, dark and pitted, rifling well worn

That's a very brief split.

It would be interesting to see a fired case.

Agree.

But even so, still a good buy (with what we know).

After all, how many people do use original 318WR ammo anyway ?

I can't see that firing modern 318s in the gun would be a problem.
I do have some original 318 ammo and it does indeed have quite a sharp shoulder almost like an A. Improved case.
A look at the fired cases would be nice as mentioned above. As long as they are the same in both chambers and fired cases from each will chamber in the other, a neck sizing is all that would be needed when reloading.

Can't say a lot about the value but I think the sum being batted around is right around what I would expect without really knowing what the bores look like and how it checks out overall.

At 14k I would be interested. I have gotten fond of small bore Doubles lately.

They are very underrated. As long as you do not try and compare them to Bolt Rifles for versatility and just enjoy them as unique and, very effective, weapons.

Appears to have been carried a lot. No apparent refinish (barrels maybe when the QD mounts were installed). The breech face of the barrels looks clean. If I had the readies I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Some info about the cartridge and some questions regarding reloading I started this topic some time ago. There you will also find some pictures of a fired cartridge;

As for the price I take it 14000$ is a bit on the cheap side? Perhaps 17-18000$ is a bether asking price when listing the gun then?

I think the answer to your cartridge is on that linked page.

All you need is a set of dies and I'd be shooting it after fire forming some cases.

Re the 14k, not without a fair bit more information being available and positive (ie the bores are excellent).
