8mm Rem Mag?

When I first started shooting there were some cartridges that I'd read articles about that I still remain fascinated about - one was the 8mm Rem Magnum (another was the 17 Remington, for some strange reason).

I've never seen one of these down the range or know anyone that has had one. There was one for sale on Used Guns a little while back and I was sent some photos in response to my query. I know the 8mm cal has never really been all that popular over here and the range of projectile options can be limited.

Does anyone here have an 8mm RM, or had one? What's it like?

When I was still getting magazines ( I think it was G&A) I remember that Craig Boddington was a real fan of the 8mm RM. I recall that he had David Miller build him one to take to the Russian mountains after one of the mountain sheep.

That is correct, Boddington has written several articles regarding the 8mm RM..not sure anyone is making an off the shelf 8RM anymore-quite a few years ago Remington had a special run of their classic in this caliber. I do seem them for sale occasionally on line

I've only ever seen one on the range, and as expected, it was a BDL Remington. Can't remember much more about it other than it made lots of noise, and seemed to kick the daylights out of the guy shooting it, I think I was about 13-14 at the time.

After hearing that I'm glad my 8x68s doesn't reach 8mm mag performance !!!.

Buddy of mine bought an 8mm Rem Mag just to test against his 8x68S.

Each gave identical results. He then declared the 8mm
Rem as "OK but I prefer my 8x68 - no belt" & what is probably the strongest brass in the industry.

I haven't checked the loading info, but I'm guessing the 8x68 uses slightly less powder than the 8mmRM too (ie slightly less recoil?).

FATBOY404, be interested to know how it performs on game too (too big for game in our neck of the woods though), and don't forget to keep 450_Ackley in the loop too

Neale - do you have the Rem. or the 8x68S?

The recoil is probably identical.

When I chambered up a 9.5x68, I needed to purchase a .375 neck throat reamer to finish the chamber. I'd used a bushed 6.5x68 reamer, plunging it in the appropriate depth for the proper neck length. I no longer have that data.

The reason I bring this up, is that I used .375H&H brass, pushing the shoulder back a whisper, then trimming slightly, not much - that much I remember. I also turned the belts to .522" and had a perfectly fitting base. Upon firing, the case expanded to the proper size, at the web with no problems at all. 2,900fps + with 270's - yeah- we ran it warm. Headspace is, of course, handled by the shoulder and bolt face.

The real point - is the capacity of the .375H&H brass formed to my 9.5x68 was virtually identical to the 8x68S case necked up to 9.5. the recoil will virtually be the same, even if there is a grain or two difference. I am thinking the 8x68X is almost identical to the 8 Rem. Mag.

The 9.5x68 is now a registered round with Huntington Die Service - at least they made a set of dies for it for my buddy, who bought my original rifle, then had another built years later.

I had one, AussieSteve owns it now. Easy to shoot ... 220s at 3000fps using Alliant powders. Steve is more a 180gr at 3400fps type. Even Nick Harvey was launching 220gr pills at 2950fps ... but publicly reporting milder mid-2800fps speeds inline with the factory ballistics.

You were right the first time.
I am shooting BGR at Dalby. It will be blooded before Monday though,I can promise you that !!!.

Tony is bringing it to Dalby for me on Saturday.

I will do a full blown report soon. (You all will wish I never built an 8x68)

FB404- I remember now, we had a discussion on the 8x68S -with some loads my friend uses. His loads sound soft compared to what I'm seeing here.

The 8x68S has a WONDERFUL case. When the Ruger .375 was first anounced, it was thought and reported they used the 8x68S case. Of course, we now know that wasn't true.

The neat thing, is they can be made, fully functional, using the long belted mag. cases - .416, .8mm or .375. The WTBY cases can be reluctant to open up if a very long tapered plunger isn't used.

I was hunting with Keith once, when he polaxed a huge cow moose at just over 200yards. She was standing in some high willow, and Keith held for the frontal low neck shot. The 196gr. Plastic tip Norma, smashed the spine on the bottom curve - of course, she dropped straight down. Dry cows make good freezer fillers.

I have one, not to mention a .17 Rem also
It is a M700 BDL and factory original. I shoot 220gr Sierra with RL25 and she is MOA. I have a Burris 3-9x40 FF II mounted.

Don't forget water buffalo with 220gr factory loads, nilgai, waterbuck, kudu, giraffe and a host of other game including coyotes and elk. That was one well travelled 8mmRemMag.

To understand why its so good you need to understand the CIP specs ... it and the 7mmSTW are the hottest loaded rounds in existance. The factory never loaded it to its potential however, when you do so ... it leaves nothing on the table compared to the 300RUM.

I thought the selection of projectiles was quite reasonable. You just have to look euro. That doesn't guarantee supply down here however.

I have shot and loaded a 8mm Rem Mag. The gun is stout for recoil. It can be loaded a little softer but that defeats the reason to have that caliber. It is effective and you have to reload to shoot it. We ended up rebarreling it to a 300 weatherby. Better bullet selection with about the same ballistics.
