drilling question
      #187646 - 09/08/11 11:15 AM

I need some help to resolve a dispute about drillings. Is anyone aware if a drilling has ever been made as an over/under/under, a triple stacked barrel. Sorry for the incorrect terminology.

When you have a Shotgun and 2 rifles of different calibres, they can and have put them VIRTUALLY on top of each other, the small rifle being in the middle but slightly to one side.

I am not sure if anyone has ever made a 3 stacked o/u/u.

"500"
I have seen those as well (is that a "verling" ). But, they are offset a bit , I would assume this is more for the action than the bbls. Also have seen some drillings with a .22 in top rib.

Not sure if it is the "verling", I am no expert on drillings, I just know of that one as I have looked at that configuration once before a long time ago when looking (or searching for) triple barrel shotguns and it popped up.

Might be worth doing a search yourself along the same lines and see what comes up.

I'm no expert on the drillings either , but I find them very interesting !!! And, I have always thought they make a lot of sense for Africa.

500
I just looked it up, the 4 bbl. is a "vierling" and 3 bbl. always a drilling ( no matter what the cal. or gauge configuration).

Gentlemen,

The drilling configuration that 500Nitro is referring to is called a "Bockdrilling" with bock in this instance meaning over/under, such as "Bockdoppelbuchse" (O/U double rifle), "Bockbuchsflinte" (typically a shotgun barrel over a rifle barrel), and of course "Bockdoppelflinte" (O/U double barreled shotgun). I have a bit of a mess in my den at the moment but I will see about taking a picture or two of a Franz Sodia I have configured as a 16ga over a 7X57R with a .22LR staggered alongside and between the shot barrel and larger rifle barrel. Now if Scott is referring to a combination where the three barrels are stacked vertically and inline I have not seen one. Perhaps Kuduae or another very knowledgeable of these things has seen such a creation and will comment.

I have to think that a gun with three rifle barrels across, three rifle barrels configured such as a more conventional drilling (SXS with one below) and even with the third barrel on top have been seen on NE before ... perhaps not but they do exist.

Regards,

Buchseman

Hi Scott,
The answer is yes, stack barrel drillings do exist.
Here is a link to one built by Johann Fanzoj.

4seventy,

I had forgotten about Johnann's (Fanzoj) work and sure enough ... thanks. Do you know if JF is the same outfit that had made the three across rifle as well? I don't see it on his website, and I went digging for a bit.

Thank you all for the help and information. It has been most usefull. Gorgeous triple stack on that webpage. I hate to even think of the cost.

Hi Buchseman,
I'm not sure if JF ever built a 3 barrel SxS rifle drilling.

Here is a link to a Dickson 16 bore SxS drilling from the late 1800's.
It's a sidelever action with many interesting features.
