a .318 with some history..?
      #187620 - 09/08/11 04:34 AM

I have aquiried a "Cogswell & Harrison" built mauser 98 in .318 WR.It has a Piccadilly,London address, with a serial number on the trigger guard of 600XX.Is this the pre-war WWII location?
Do they still have records?
I have two boxes of ammo and after a gunsmith check over,I plan to start shooting it. Iron sights only,no drill&tapping,no scope. I would like to keep it as is,however it will require a new silvers pad.

The .318WR has had some consideration by members on here a little while ago, so it would be good to see how the originals were put together.

Can't wait to read of the history of this one.

Thanks for posting.

Do you have close up pic of the rear sight? Is it a replacement? Hard to see in the pic.

Wow.. I just heard from C&H and here what they found!

(Thank you for your email. This rifle was produced by our company and was exported to Kenya, Africa on the 7th of January 1946.)

Sounds like someone went to celabrate the end of the war!!

Now what would be interesting is what date the Mauser was made and whether the order was during the war or the gun was already made and just sold and shipped in 1946.

Anything about the sight ?

I'm having some camera issue.....
I'm tossed a little as to weather this is the original or replaced from some other English gun,the leaves are engaved for yardage, however it seems a little too wide for the base?
I can't find any Mauser markings at all? But,it's damn cool....

Philip

It looks very similar to one of mine, a low end one from WR.
ie a working gun, very little embellishment.
