Sale 19363 - Quail Lodge Sale, 18 Aug 2011 to 19 Aug 2011
California, Carmel

Lot No: 455•
The ex-Maharaja of Kotah "Tiger Car"
1925 Rolls-Royce New Phantom Torpedo Sports Tourer
Coachwork by Barker
Chassis no. 23 RC
Engine no. CT 15
Equipped for hunting Bengal tigers and other wild game, this especially opulent and intriguing 1925 Rolls-Royce Torpedo Sports Tourer was originally commissioned by India's Umed Singh II. Also known as Sahib Bahadur, Umed Singh II was the Maharaja of Kotah from 1889 until his death in 1940. An avid big game hunter, the Maharaja enjoyed ample opportunity to engage his passion on the extensive grounds of his family's private estate. Monarchs, world leaders and titans of international industry frequently hunted alongside him, as his guests.

In early 1925, the Maharaja contacted Barker and Co., Ltd. of London—at the time, the preferred coachbuilder for Rolls Royce chassis—to specifically outfit a Rolls Royce New Phantom (aka Phantom I) for service as his estate's main hunting car.

I know several Indians who would easily be able to buy this car back if they were allowed to own it in India - sadly, an impossibility under current Indian regulations. Even a historical sword that an Indian billionaire bought back to donate to a museum in India some years ago was held up as a "dangerous weapon" by Indian customs and the man prosecuted until a public uproar forced the Indian system to drop charges against him.

If there's one pathetic socialist dictatorship on earth, it is India.

Daryl,

That is very nearly the case. All gun imports (except target arms for participants in ISSF shooting events) were banned in 1984, and gun ownership is restricted to three guns per individual. Getting a license for a semi auto long arm is almost impossible, and, recently, a court judgment brought air rifles also under the purview of the firearms licensing authorities.

It is a question of time before the only way that a law abiding Indian will be able to hold a firearm will be to either join the army or the police force. Apart from Nazi Germany and Communist China, I am not sure such a ridiculous state of affairs exists vis a vis firearms anywhere else on earth.

Best wishes, and good hunting, my friend!

Oh yes...
I will tell you, having been a car fanatic all my life, you must get out to an event such as the Pebble Beach Concours, Amelia Island Concours or any of the big European shows. Cars such as this are simply fantastic!
The Pebble Beach event is astounding although the last couple times I have been, there were just too many people. Nearly impossible for decent photography without a press pass. IMO, the auctions which accompany the event are just as enjoyable.

John,

the text says "In addition to the firearms currently shown with the vehicle, the Tiger Car is accompanied by an ammo box......". So that's all included in the auction.
It's funny that Bonhams have not included a detail despription or at least a list of the guns. After all, they do have their gun experts.

The Howdah pistol appears to be a percussion muzzleloader.
Then I see a long-barrelled over-under shotgun, a side-by-side shotgun, a single-barrel shotgun (probably pump action) and a rifle, probably military, probably large caliber, with a military sling. It would be interesting to know if these come from the maharadja's arsenal or are later additions.

I am pretty sure that Paul Roberts of the "Old Rigby" told me one time he hunted out of this Rolls back in late 50's while buying doubles in India for his Dad. Whether or not it was this Rolls or another I do not know (but how many could there have been? ) . Never the less it is such a cool car !!! Would love to have hunted out of it.

I had similar thoughts on the arms included. I think it is a "mockup". I read elsewhere that no original photos of the car in action have turned up.

Several Napalese crank operated guns were recently imported to the US. I'm guessing this one was married to the "kit". Here is one you can own...

Interesting.

I did find it unusual the mention of a machine gun as used for Tiger hunting at the time ... And the cannon for elephant ...

However do not pretend to be an expert on the more obscure practices at the time.

Ha ha, so you actually own one yourself?

Well done, but have you posted photos of it for us to enjoy?

I know the feeling, I bought the WR 10-bore recently and did not remember I once posted photos of it on NE years before, until another member pointed them out to me.

That car and kit is pretty damn cool.
I was raised from early youth in best-grade restoration shops, working on best of show, best in class, people's choice, etc show cars.
I've handled similar vintage top-shelf cars but never anything with an on board armory like this.

Neat stuff
I'd love to spend a few days hunting from it!

Cheers
