Look what Dave found!

Just another log...

Some funny-lookin' tracks...

Dave poses with the log and the bow that won third place in the 2010 ABA NT Men's Recurve Division...

Gradually, some of them wake-up, and one of the more sociable ones comes to inspect the strange creatures staring-in at them...

Great photos and well done on third place.

With the Eagles and Hawks around the NT, no wonder they are tucked up out of sight. Those little blighters wouldn't last long.

BTW - Do you reckon they were pure bred ?

If only you could read that pup's mind, staring into Dave's grin and thinking "Is he going to eat me with those big teeth or what"

Great photos and story,

Cheers Mate,

Cute little tykes.
Top line predators are still needed in the balance.
It's good to see someone still using a recurve as well, I get tired of looking at all those Star Wars mechanical contraptions.

Nigel, I really don't know how pure they are. That question is a source of contention for graziers here, as we're the only part of Australia with a law to stop pure dingos getting shot (but they can be poisoned with a permit), but wild dogs, or anything less than pure dingo, can be shot. What they don't tell us is how to tell the difference, and with some scientists asserting that only Fraser Island dingos are pure, and others disagreeing, it is very unclear.

Tony, we like our recurves, longbows and timber arrows here, eh!

That log reminded me of the last lot of dingo's I shot. A whole family living in a log. Yes, it was pre the ban by a year or two and I now adhere to the law even though the graziers don't like it.

The reason I asked is the white paws and chest. Reminded me of my Kelpie cross which had a similar chest pattern and I don't remember seeing it on other dingo's I've seen which I know were pure bread BUT I am no expert on dingo's and know you do get different colour variations.

Everyone says the only pure Dingo's are on Frazer but there are places in Aust where people (and dogs) haven't got to yet, even in the NT !!!

Anyway, I'll leave it to the experts to argue.

Again, Nice pics.

Most people I know did.

I used to unless 1. We really were hunting Buff and Pigs and hadn't yet come across any and 2. Were asked not to by who ever I was with, 3. I was in an area where they weren't supposed to be shot.

They can be trained like Dogs. You need a permit in some states to own a Dingo (Victoria definately).

True dingos that I have seen are not that big a dog and normally quite lean / almost skinny. I am sure you get bigger one's but I am talking one's that really do live in the bush, no skaveging from humans.

It did.

Not long before it ate the baby, it came into our tent at the same location, opened (or pushed the lid off) and esky cooler and took all of our meat !!!

They were not afraid of entering tents !!!

Is that what they get for them in WA and Qld ?

Has anyone read the Tom Cole book where he describes taking skins across into WA (I think the bounty paid was higher than in NT) where the Police Sgt makes some wry comment about all the NT Dingoes walk over the border into WA and drop dead !!! LOL.

The bitch is how I found my family.

I shot one Dingo as it ran off up the hill across the creek
- it made the fatal mistake of one last fatal look. One of my better DR shots !!!

We carried on for a few hundred metres and saw the bitch heading back to the log where the family was. She had obviously been with the mate and they had taken different routes home on contacting us.

Anyway, as we walked up, they starting popping out one after the other so I started popping them.

If we hadn't been so far from camp I would have kept a skull or two.

In the ranges between Drake and Tabulum, on the Bruxner Highway ( that's west of Casino for you coasties ) I used to often see black & tan dingoes looking for road kill.
I asked the local Dingo expert, at Bonalbo just North of there and he said that Uni Biologists had studied them and found them to be a pure strain.

Not permitted as a pet in the Southern parts of SA. Shot on sight South of the Dog Fence.

Amazing how tame those pups were. Most young carnivores in my experience are aggressive and/or frightened.

I remember seeing "some guys" in 1983 running off the road in a certain "central" location with rifle in hand chasing a dingo. Unfortunately were not successful so couldn't check its stomach for "babies".

Yeah that was the case back in 1983 too when it was not illegal to shoot them in the NT.
