the "Waldläufer"
      #186297 - 22/07/11 09:46 AM

"Waldläufer" is a sometimes mythical and rare Driling version where a 22 lr barrel is on top of two shotgun barrels. its not common that such a drilling will be on the market like here
http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=3386415
again excellent work from Schmidt & Habermann in Suhl. the 22 Mag. was not original of course! this was a 22lr but after the war someone decided that the old 22 lang für Büchse wasnt enough anymore.
"Waldläufer" is an old german word meaning French Canadian woodsman, the Coureurs des bois

Great gun Lancaster. You always have someting interesting to post.
With the barrel on the top, it would be interesting to see if the .22 is fired by a hammer or a striker as it must be tough to fit all that stuff under the toplever; Unless that firing pin is on a very severe angle...

I own one, same as seen above except I have no scope mount, only the iron sights.
The rifle is striker fired.

Great gun, I really like mine!!

Saw a Vierling once (.22rifle over and under (7mm) side by side smoothbore 16's), long ago, when I worked a short time in a gun sales shop in Vancouver. It felt a bit heavy for rising birds, but would have worked from a blind.

The .22 in the rib is a wonderful idea. It would be fun for potting bunnies that 'hold'.

please feel free to post pics here

there is a guy in ferlach making such drillings with a small .17 caliber rimfire barrel between the shotgun barrels. its so small that it looks like a common sxs shotgun.

Is it possible that the Waldläufer was originally chambered for the obsolete .22 WRF (Winchester Rimfire) cartridge? That cartridge was developed in connection with the 1890 Winchester rifle and was a much more deadly hunting cartridge than the .22 lr (lfB).

The .22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire) is identical to the .22 WRF in all dimensions other than in length, and .22 WRF cartridges can safely be fired in a .22 WMR chamber.

45gr. lead FN #@ 1,450fps = .22 WRF. My Dad had a .22WRF Stevens when he was a kid.

possible because there wasnt a product from the american market you can get in germany. never heard about such a chambering here but possible. if it was a 22 lr before it shows an excellent work to go with the 22 mag now.

The .22 WRF and .22 WMR both shoot a .224" bullet as opposed to a .22" bullet for the .22LR. the .22 rim fire mag. shoots a jacketed bullet. Here, folks don't seem to care much about the sizes as it really doesn't matter as far as pressure is concerned, but jacketed bullets in rimfire barrels usually means rapid loss in accuracy for the softer RF barrel - or so the 'word' goes. Many .22LR Cadets were chambered here for .22 Hornets.

The reason I mention this, is I did not think it would be possible to get such a re-chamber to the RF mag. to be re-proofed in either England or Germany due to the diameter differences - bullet to groove diameter.

Dropping or raising the pin strike as well as well as extractor work would have to be done to make the changes, along with chambering and throating. The reamer's pilot would also have to be reduced in diameter - maybe.

so the only other option is that the original 22 lr barrel was changed post war against a 22 Mag barrel

I'd love one of those "Waldlaeufer's" for use on small game on my farm and vineyard. It would be perfect. Side by side shotgun for ducks, rabbits, hare and foxes close by in the winter grasses, and a scope if a fox, rabbit or hare stops still long enough at longer range.

I imagine these handle very similar to a side by side shotgun, seeing the extra barrel is fairly slim.

The price on the site doesn't look too bad either?
