Hinge Pin Lube Survey
      #186209 - 21/07/11 02:39 AM

Thought I would initiate a thread to see what others are using to lube the hinge pins. I currently use Krytox, a Dupont teflon grease. I started using Krytox after reading forums on South Bend lathes. Apparently users are injecting it into the spindle on the older models. This completely eliminates daily oiling at this point and improves (apparently) lathe operation. I figured it would work really well for the hinge pin on a fine double.

What do you use?

For years, I have been using only synthetic lubrication in my best doubles, with excellent results, because, over time, it leaves no varnish-like build up, no residue build up at all, unlike petroleum based lubrication. I use grease on hinge pin, and oil on internal workings, where needed, all synthetic. Best synthetics not only do that, but they provide better lubrication, less friction, and are much improved over petroleum based lubs, though they cost more. More cost is meaningless, after all, how much does one use in a double? If you have ever taken apart good old classic doubles, you have seen this residue build-up that I am talking about, and you know negative effects of it.

I looked for it ages ago and could never find it.

However, just found this web page.

Hi 500Nitro

Thanks for the information, i have come across that site befor and unfortunatley it does not work.

I'm not sure if they still make it, but I will continue to search for an outcome, I will advise if I come across a source.

Thanks for the replys. Seems Owens and Kili grease are both about cranberry color. I think Mobil 1 synthetic wheel bearing grease is about the same color. I've used Mobil 1 wheel bearing grease, thick and sticky, but has a Timken OK rating of 45, the other thread I was directed to says timken 50-70 is best.

Any thoughts on moly EP grease for the hinge pin?

Are you not just trying to lube the pin, I wouldn't think that you were trying to keep the grease from failing at 100 miles and hour, so why would the Timken rating matter? I'm having trouble grasping why a special grease is necessary. I have a grease made by Wilson Combat that I use to lube my 1911, between the frame and slide, that seems to work well on the hinge pin.

I use synthetic "EP rated" auto wheel bearing grease.

The most important thing to watch for is, that's it's EP rated grease.

Again: what is the big deal about the "EP rated" grease? Why does it matter?

I'd think just about any moly grease would work fine. Even in applications like the bearing points of my flintlocks that are submerged in water and blasted with WD40 afterwards, the grease stays where' it's put to lube and protect bearing surfaces. I only lube then once a year - if I remember.

I know the hinge pin isn't submerged - the point is, the moly grease is so much better than required, nothing else is needed.

EP just means it designed for Extreme Pressure.

I use Chevron #2 (red color)for warm weather and #1 (green color) for colder use.
If it's good enough for my baby fleet it's good enough for my DR's.

Because the hinges on fine Doubles are made from not too hard steel, I would recommend the use of a Molybdenum based grease.
Kamilaroy has come closest to it with motor bike chain lube or spray grease, as most of these have Moly in them.

For metal to metal sliding action, this is the best stuff, because it prevents galling even if the grease component has completely dried up. It's is used a lot in Air Rifles as well.

You could probably make your own by mixing Superfine Moly with Lithium grease.

^ Eh Tony,

Mine has a compounded problem inasmuch that the system relies on a single cocking mechanism but actuated by two (eccentric) cams. (The FT Baker patent). Thus I am very cautious as the fabrication of a replacement was not cheap!

BTW thanks for an exceptional job on rust bluing both the Alex Henry and the rimfire Martinus. (joke on the last)

Rick

thanks for the hat

I have always used an EP grease from one of those specialist USA lubricating supply companies. Can't recall the name now but a tube cost over NZ$30 when a Castrol equivalent EP was about NZ$8. Used a small syringe to place a dab on the hinge pin/socket faces and the forend/action mating faces of my Miroku O/U shotgun after cleaning. Many years competition and many years bird shooting under wet and also often dusty conditions sees the gun as tight as the day it was bought new.

I use MILTEC-1, synthetic metal conditioner grease!

It is a very modern synthetic lubricant designed for military use in all kinds of weather conditions.

MILTEC-1 Grease stays in place and lubricates in the severest conditions.
*Has excellent water wash-out resistance.
*Has superior shock-load protection
*Reduces corrosion, wear and galling

This product comes in a small 2 oz squeeze tube that fits well in your fitted case, or in a day pack. I have a tube in every one of the fitted cases for all my doubles, and always have a tube along on any hunt! I buy this from LONG GRASS, in Texas, as they keep it in stock but it can be bought from the maker I suppose!
