Sizeing Frustration
      #185933 - 16/07/11 06:28 PM

RANT:
A 2nd hand Lyman 450 Lubrasizer is the work of the devil. They are frustrating contraptions with complicated linkages and minimum space to adjust 'stuff'. They have been sent here to frustrate newb Boolit casters and prevent them from sizeing and lubeing their new 9.3mm 286grain FN Boolits and shooting them at the range.
END RANT

Luckily as a member of the dominant species on the planet I have not only survived, but virtually re-built the said work of the devil.

Now when it stops raining I can get to the range ....

John you wouldn't have those troubles if you used good calibres like 358 or 375

When you do get them to the range, report please.

Cheers
Greg

The RCBS lube-sizer is really no easier to use. They both use the same dies, and general makeup and manipulation. I have 2 lyman sizers, a really old yellow sizer and the newer 450 model as well as a couple RCBS. All of them are set up for different calibres and all have lubed and sized many thousands of bullets, especially the .44 mag Lyman 450 set-tup and the .38/.357 on the old Lyman sizer. An RCBS set

Getting the depth right is important & not always easy, as you found. Bear with it, you'll get there and it will become easy.

You have the right idea Daryl. I think one set up for each common calibre would be a good idea.

I only need two, 9.3 for which the 450 is now exactly set up and my .416 for which I have dies but also a custom Lee sizer kit (orange bowl).

I just purchased a RCBS and it works very well, no issues at all, as my daddy once said "If all else fails, read the destruction manual"

John -

I still use a Lyman No.45 (not, 450, but 45) Lube/Sizer. The people at Lyman treat me with timid curiosity whenever I call for parts or advice. NO - there are no longer parts for it, but you can manage sometimes with a little "engineering".

I often believe that one of the most important reasons for casting bullets is to see if you can safely overcome all of the problems with the equipment.

Good Luck...

Reggie

Well, maybe try my method.

Use Lee push thru dies.

Tumble lube with Lee Liquid Alox, TWICE, letting it dry fully first. If need be, chill the bullets for the second tumble. Takes no time at all to do.

Then with the gloppy lube run them thru the sizer die.

Voila! Lube grooves may not be 100% filled but it seems not to matter. If you want, lube them a third time and when loading, simply pick up the bullet and smear off the lube on the bullet base by wiping on a cloth next to the press. I've shot various bullets at 1500-2000 fps with good results using this method.

Most of the time you don't even need to lube them more than once. I use regular bullets, too, not the Lee Tumble Lube bullets.

If you want, you can hand lube with White Lithium Grease after lubing with Lee Liquid Alox, but the multiple lubing and WLG really is a last resort, the Lee Liquid stuff works surprisingly well once over.

Can't understand the issue with the Lyman 450. Had one for years, sized and lubed from 7mm, 45 and 38 cal pistol, to 404J. Different styles in those calibres, different number of lube grooves, with and without gas checks. Simple enough to change dies, simple enough to set up for different depths to fill the grooves on anything put through it. Hardly rocket science stuff.
Make sure your sizing die is correct for your bore size and the bullet is casting large enough to actually size in the die(enough tin in the mix to fill out in the mould. If you try to size an undersized bullet you can expect to see lube where you don't want it.

Whenever I've seen a 2nd hand lubrisizer for sale at a reasonable price, I've bought it and so I've now got an older Lyman model, a new Lyman and an RCBS one. I tend to adjust the Lyman machines for one calibre each and vary the RCBS as it seems to be more robust. I only have two real problems.

1. It's easy to cross thread the sizing die retaining nut on the Lyman. I solve this by playing the heat gun over the die hole (for want of a better word) and the nut so that any stray lubricant is nice and runny and then the nut tends to go in straight first time. I gently press the nut in place with the flat of the spanner using the ram before I try to tighten it, this helps keep it straight.

2. In using the lubrisizer I often get lubricant squeezed under the base of the bullet. This wipes off but I've never quite understood why it will happen every few bullets or so. I try to establish a regular routine with the pressure screw but it still happens. Maybe I should use a stiffer grease and I've tried that but then I can't work the damn thing at all in winter. Life's too short to drain the lubricant in and out whenever the weather changes. I might try a harder grease with a Lyman heater that goes under the lubrisizer or I might just put up with it.

I did have a go at making my own lubricant but gave up because I couldn't beat the commerical stuff and I was spending more money.

Maybe one of your problems is using to hard a lube without a heater attached to your lube/sizer. I recently added one to mine and oh what a difference it made in lubing the bullet. Everyone now comes out with the lube grooves completely filled and you don't have to fight turning the crank, nor do you have to worry what the temperature is in the shop or outside.

Guys, I'm sorry if I misled you but the OP was 50% toungue in cheek. Here are the bullets I produced the next day after the 're-build'.

At 50 yards, 51 grains 2206H with one wool wad went into 0.480". I will try it again at 100 yards when I get a chance.

Thx for your help.

It is a #2 alloy cast HP/FN GC Boolitt from a N.O.E. (Night Owl Enterprises) twin cavity mould. One FN and the other cavity a HP.

The FN goes 286 grains and the HP 280 grains. I bought it through a group buy on Cast Boolits Forum. They were/are running a second group buy now ???

Thanks very much.

Forgot to ask; What is the as-cast diameter?
