Hi guys, I used to post on here but have not been around since july of 07.Long story- got transfered to work 283 miles from home and after a while went on sick leave for surgery. That did not go well and ended up on disability. That was 3 years ago and am finally able to stand on my own hind legs for short periods of time.
I have vision problems now as well and can't see the front sights on my double rifle any more.
Working on a mount for it to set up a scope. The rifle is a Pedersoli SXS 45-70 hammer rifle and the hammer access around the scope is a barrier that I haven't fully solved yet.As for the rifle it is a real shooter and worth the trouble to adapt a scope to it.
On the good side of things I can get around my shop now and have built up 4 bolt rifles, 6 lever rifles and 4 single shots. Disability retirement is not all bad.
If anyone has sugestions for mounting a scope on a hammer rifle I would like to hear about it.
Thanks in advace for your ideas.

Welcome Back Hoosier!

We'll do our best to help medicate you via the website.
On your sighting interests, have you considered a red-dot?
There are some very very nice very high quality miniature (they fit on the rear of 1911 slides) red dot sighting systems available these days. A few of our members have been using them on big-bore dangerous game double rifles and fast-shooting driven game double rifles for hunting boar etc.

You can set them low on the barrel, in the express sight dovetail. The low height and forward mounting keep the instinctual pointing and aiming of the double rifle, and the miniature size and light weight tend to not affect regulation at all.

Think on that.
We can find photos for you of similar setups if you like.

Cheers
Tinker

I have gave some thought to a red dot and have one on hand-a Burris Fast Fire 2. I would like to see some mounting arrangements if anyone has photos.

I've got the Burris also and plan on having a weaver style single mount screwed on. It should be fine as long as it's below the iron sights.

A long eye reliel pistol scope mounted further ahead may work but finding a home for the front base may be a challenge if it misses the quarter rib. A tall front ring may adress the height issue. When you think of it a scout type mount for a double makes sense there's just no one doing it. Might take a while to get used to the "look" but it sure would be quick handling.

Check out the IPSC sites - those small, short re-dot sights are amazing. I was looking at a couple 'race' guns with them mounted atop the slide, the other day - impressive - & exceptionally fast to pick up on target with a handgun - would be even easier with a rifle, adjustable for intensity and able to see the dot, even against snow when set high enough. Some start as soon as the cover is removed while others have switches.

I would be looking that direction, unless I had to have objects magnified as with a scope.

When mounted, it would probably be lower than the hammer's ears.

I know lots of red dots don't like Canada or cold weather as those little batteries can't take the cold.

Smoke-

I've known of quite a few 'hard condition' applications of these micro red dot sights.
A note on the scout-scope arrangement is the double rifle's regulation can be significantly affected by the relatively massive attachment on the barrels. Many guys have complained of loss of regulation due to the kind of scope mounting you mentioned above.
Might work, Might not.

Cheers

Good point tinker - the weight will affect the regulation (may or not be significant though) but also the axis of the line of sight of the scope could be a factor if it isn't in the same line as the open sights (once again may not be significant though).

The units I referred to weigh an ounce, maybe 2 including battery.

I would think that a sight as light as this mounted rearward enough would have little or no effect on regulation.
Raises a question I will ask on a new thread.

Daryl-

That's pretty much what I was noting with the micro red dot sights like the little Burris and Docter Optic sights -- very little mass, good. The much more massive telescopic sights like the compact Leupold 'Scout Scopes' and their mounting systems -- bad as they are likely to affect barrel regulation, especially when mounted far down the rib in the 'Scout Scope' configuration.

I have came up with a possible solution for scoping my sxs hammer rifle.I was digging around and found a Weaver 1 x 3 scope that had not seen daylight for quite a while (forgot about having it).
Working on a mount for it now & looks like hammer clearance will hot be a problem.
