I'm getting that sick feeling ...
      #185458 - 09/07/11 12:02 AM

(Also posted at AR)
Reading a number of threads here and at AR this morning has caused a hare-brained scheme to emerge from the depths of my sick mind.
The thread on reboring vs. rebarreling made me realize that a Ruger No. 1 with quarter rib and banded front sight is the perfect candidate for a rebore.
And what better candidate for this classic "Farqish" design than a .333 Jeffery Flanged?
Biggest obstacle is finding a reboring shop that can cut a .333 barrel. Of course, .338 is an absolute cinch. So the project then becomes a .333/.338 Jeffery wildcat.
Why go to all this trouble?
Romance! Passion! Coolness factor!
I'd be the only guy on my block with such a rifle, and could stuff all available .338 bullets into that wonderfully stout little case, including the big 300-grainers that made the Jeffery's reputation.
I know, I'm a sick puppy.

We hashed this over not too long ago.
I agree that the .333 Flanged would be great fun in a No.1
From the conversation, it seems plausable that .333" bullets can be made from just about any .338" projectile, so sounds like a very doable little project.
I also agree that the .333 Flanged sounds very Farqish but in reality, an original Jeffery Farquharson in .333 is a very rare rifle indeed.

Huvius: Are you referring to John's .318 vs. .333 thread? That's what renewed my interest in these two cartridges. Unlike John, I might be willing to concede the bore diameter and go with .338, but would ream the chamber as close to .333 Flanged as possible.

I think a 338 based on either of the 333 Cartridges would be a great idea.

And this coming from a traditionalist who owns one of each !!!

A .338/333 makes a lot of sense - to me. 2.5" case with .545" base.

.348 case would work but short by 3/10's. If the chamber was cut for the .348 case, it would no longer be a .333Jeffery Flanged, but - would VERY easily duplicate it's ballistics. Of course, the .338/348 is already a US wildcat.

Is there anyone that still makes a .333 barrel ? Or anyone that is set up to rebore to .333 ? I would rather have the real deal than a .338/333 flange . Just me.

Robert: I'm making inquiries on a shop that can rebore to .333, but am not holding my breath. A rebarrel on a No. 1 adds considerably to the cost because of all the fiddling required.

No sure I understand about the fiddling, Bill. Barrel, threads and extractor - same as any other gun isn't it? I'd think a .45/70 or .450/400 extractor would work.

Bill ,
I understand !!! I had a .318 WR (.330) made 10 15 years ago , I bought the guy a custom cutter (he kept it) . Turned into a pretty expensive project(then traded to a friend) Let me know what you find out . If it helps let him know I will take one as well (or let him rebore a bbl.)
Robert
PS just ordered a box of .333 Flange shells !!!!

Daryl: The fiddling involves the quarter rib timing and fit, etc. I had the late and great Chick Donnelly of Siskiyou Barrel Works rebarrel a No. 1 about 15 years ago and he said he would never do another.

Robert: I'm looking for a source of .333 barrels, or someone who can rebore to that diamtere, but might as well watch for .330 as well.

Robert: I have checked most of the usual suspects and see that Krieger offers a 1:12 twist .318/.330 barrel for $310. Lothar Walther also lists a .318 barrel. Still no luck finding a .333.

Dan Pedersen at www.cutrifle.com makes the proper .333 barrels. Woodleigh makes the bullets, and you can get brass from Bertram. Good luck with your project!

Sounds good to me.

I hate these threads, as they encourage doubt on firm already made decisions!

Go for it.
