Ruger No 1 Tropical in .405Win arrives at last!
      #18513 - 27/08/04 08:30 PM

I have finally got my .405Win Ruger No1 in the Tropical model and canot fault it . I have a question can the .405Win be loaded to .450/.400 specs? Thanks

Short answer: No.

Long answer:
I've seen 2300 fps with a 300gr for about 3800 ft/lbs. Your ruger is very strong and can take +P loads.

I suspect you can get another 50 to 100fps. The 450/400 can push a 400Gr bullet to 2150fps for about 4100 ft/lbs.

That can be acheved with the 45/70. I had a #1 light sporter (7.0 lbs) in 45/70 and loaded a 405gr to 2150fps. The recoil was more than I could bear.

Hodgdon has .405 Win data with 300 gr and 400 gr bullets with pressure listed.

Check it out at:

I've got a #1-B which has been rebarreled to .405 ( 24" tube ) and I go a bit hotter than the Hodgdon's data with Varget to get @ 2,050fps with the 400gr Woodleigh soft. After that point you can't get enough Varget in the case to make a difference. A quicker powder might do it but I get sub-inch groups at 100yds, works for me. FWIW, I worked up my data before Hodgdon published theirs.

A fellow who posts on AR as Robgunbuilder says he opened up the throat of his Encore in .405 to take a bullet loaded 0.25" further out ( if memory serves ) and he claims to get 2,150 fps without pressure signs. Might be practical with the #1 if I needed a couple hundred extra fps.

I've seen data for the "Tropical" loading for the 450-400 listing 1,950 fps for a 400gr bullet intended for high temperature use. And I believe I've seen postings by people who actually chrono'd 450-400 ammo state that the actual velocity was a bit under the "2,150" claim from real double rifles. confused yet?

My rifle has fired one ( 1 ) shot at game and that Woodleigh sailed through the lower chest of a Blue Wildebeest bull at about 40 yards. He galloped about 25 yards, collided with a tree and was down for the count (sounded like a car wreck!).

Short answer is IMHO your #1 can be loaded to kill anything you should chase with a single shot rifle, it's not a 450-400 but the animals won't know the difference.

Rick

Well RLI, it's all your fault, I ordered a 1-H in .405 yesterday. Now I am doing the very impatient waiting thing...

Good to hear you are getting a .405Win your wait will not be as long as mine, I had to wait 3 months for the Ruger No.1 but the longest wait was 3 years for a Winchester "Classic Safari Express" in .375H&H Left Hand maybe living in Australia has something to do with it I suspect! You will be happy with your No.1 as when I checked it over I could not fault it in any way wood to metal fit is the best I have seen on a production rifle. You will now have to get Winchester 1895 in .405Win. but that was a longer wait again! Good Shooting!

RLI,

Just outta curiousity, if you try any of the Woodleigh 400gr bullets let me know if you can seat them at the cannelure (sp?). Wondering how long the throat is in factory .405 rifles.

The 400 gr Woodleigh is the primary attraction of this rifle combination. Ruger shows the same 1-14" twist on their web site for both the .405 and the various .416s, so that's not going to be a problem, and if Ruger follows their usual practice the throat should be fairly long right out of the box. I don't usually get pumped up about smokeless powder guns, but this one ought to be a peach for buff with the right loads!

Congrats on the rifle. I am sure that you will enjoy it as I have enjoyed my #1's and #3.

I have been contemplating getting one to rechamber to 450/400 3" Nitro. I already have a double in this caliber, so have all the reloading supplies needed.

My question concerns weight of the #1H (Tropical) in this caliber. Most of the other #1H's that I have used had a muzzle heavy feel (nothing at all like the #1S). Is this rifle the same, and what does it actually weigh?

Thanks,
Jim

I had looked at a .416 Rigby but was not impressed with the heavy barrel "muzzle heavy" I looked at a .375H&H and I felt the same but the .405Win feels right it does have a heavy barrel but is better balanced .I think it would weigh about 8lbs and just feels better than the .375H&H and .416Rigby models. I noticed the Ruger site says the .405 and .375 are 8 1/2 lbs but the .405 feels lighter.

RLI,

Thanks for the info. Guess that I will be on the lookout for a #1 in 405 with decent wood .

Well, that was fast! The .405 No.1-H arrived yesterday and I lucked out with a pretty decent set of wood, too - straight grain through the wrist and fiddleback starting about half-way back. Factory ammo isn't cheap, but I got three boxes to get started and generate brass. Now to order some of those Woodleighs!

FWIW, Midway, Graff's and Cabela's all carry Hornady brass. It's a bit cheaper than using the loaded stuff.

In my rifle brass seems to last for several shootings and the most common failures are small cracks around the mouth probably from being crimped for the lead loads I use.

Right, then. First impressions. The throat in the No.1 is not very long and max overall length with 400 gr Woodleigh soft points is 3.215". With this length the cannelure is about a cannelure's width below the case mouth. Effective case capacity is somewhat less that I had hoped, but still enough to get to buff power I suspect. FWIW, the factory 300 flat nose is loaded to an OAL of 3.10" and has 55.6 grs of what looks like Hodgdon Varget (AR2208) in it. This is not a load recommendation, yada yada...

The trigger on this one is much better than I had expected; having good wood and a good trigger, does that mean it will shoot well too, or do I only get two out of three? Stay tuned.

You can come very close to it...Robgunbuilder who posts on AR has duplicated the 450-400 with his No.1 in .405 and he is very knowledgable...

I solved the problem by buying a 416 Rem in a Ruger No.1, and that nets me an easy 2400 FPS with a 400 gr. bullet..I am betting I can get 2600 FPS or better if I try..but no need, I'm right where I need to be at 2400 FPS....

My therory is if you want 404 or 450-400 balistics then buy a 404 or 450-400 or rechamber the .405 to one or the other using a 405 neck on the required reamer....

If one wants a .405 then use a .405 at its intended velocity of about 1900 FPS.
