My brother's first buffalo...
      #184721 - 27/06/11 11:17 PM

My brother and I were invited to share a hunt on a property a friend has access to, and although there was still much water from a really big wet, and the game wasn't easy to find, we still found enough to keep us in good mischief. The big boars eluded us.

Nick warmed-up on these pigs with my .416 Rigby. He was very impressed with Alex's work, as it has been awhile since he's seen and shot this rifle.

Then Nick gave his big brother a turn on the .416 Rigby for these two.

This bull was spotted from a long distance grazing along a station track, and we stalked over a kilometre to get him. Nick closed to about 90 metres in fairly open country, and put two Woodleigh 410 grain RNSNs from the .416 Rigby into the boiler room, followed by another for insurance after it collapsed. He was pretty stoked to have his first-ever on the ground.

This sow was an unusual experience. She was alone on a little swamp. I don't see too many sows alone. At the shot, she reacted as though I'd missed, and ran 70 metres before doing a final somersault. I'd shot from about 100 metres, and this was my first pig with the Ruger No.1 in .300H&H. I used a 180 grain Woodleigh PPSN.

Right at last light, we encountered a small mob of pigs, and slew six between us. The exit wound on the littlest that my brother shot with the .416 Rigby was unlike any I have seen, lifting the hide substantially.

Although far from my preferred calibre for buffalo, the following morning an opportunity to shoot one with the Ruger No.1 .300H&H fell into my lap as we slipped into a little swamp. It was quite an ask, and I definitely don't recommend engaging a bull in thick timber with such a rifle. Happily, Nick didn't need to join-in with the real buffalo rifle. I would've preferred to have tried Hydros, but didn't have any up-and-running.

Yep, living in the Territory is pretty cool, and provides good opportunities to the persistent.

looks like a blast Ben, I really enjoyed my time up there, fishing was incredible too, shame it´s such a bugger to get to for me. If my kids were older I´d be there again and soon !, best

That's what I call family fun.

When you load up your Hydro's in the 300 H&H you will be able to sell all those "old big bangers" as it will be all you need.(But who wants to ?)

Hi Ben & Nick,

A good story and great pic's. I'm glad to see that 'Nick' has his head for the wall, the first is always a 'Hoot' to have.

Well done to you both,

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Thanks, fellows. It is special, to hunt with family. I should've had something for scale in the photo of the exit wound. I estimate the pig to be about 20kg, and the hole to be a little bigger than a golf ball.

Hi Ben

Hunting with family is indeed special, both my brother and I shot our first buffalo last year. We thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so we are heading up to NT again this year, can’t wait to get there.

I think the saying goes; "What has need got to do with it??"
Congrats on a fine outing. Can only improve over the next few months.

Good work on the Buff and pigs.

Jeez that pig is a mess with that exit wound!

Hunt hard and enjoy the adventure.
