Blooding the 8x68s.
      #183131 - 06/06/11 07:53 PM

Tony Small finished my 8x68 last week and bought it to Dalby on the weekend.
Broke it in on Sat and Sun and saw it had some potential.
Took it to work today and shot four boars with it.

Load was 200 grain Speer Hotcore,72 grains 2209 and a CCI primer for 3005 fps.

The mob of pigs before I opened up.
Shot four boars from four shots. One still shot and three running.

Congratulations!

What do you think of the performance of the Speer 200grs SP?
Did they exit on the boars, or did you recover some bullets?

best regards
Rolf

Rolf
Three exits and one recovered that I will put a photo of here in daylight.

To answer your question. I like Hotcores for their value and have used a lot of them in my 338-06.
Bought them for $46 a 100 to work up some loads and run the barrel in.

At 3000 fps they are very fragile but hey four pigs for four shots. At that speed I wouldn't use them on Red deer or Sambar but OK for pigs, goats and Fallow deer.

Well done.

My 8x68S barrel was at Mialls when I visited them last week, but they wouldn't let me pick it up, and the .404 barrel and all the others, so it seems the barrels with arrive via Queensland.

Tried to buy all sorts of stuff from them, but none of it was in stock.

Hopefully one of these days it will arrive in SA, but not before I am back there myself.

Purchased some walnut blanks today, and a whole "trailer load" of brass and bullets tomorrow and the day after I hope.

Probably no 8x68S's though yet! Got some brass already but need to get the dies still.

Good to see you'll have some loads to share by the time it happens.

Nice chunk of plank on that rifle, Neale. Good work on the hogs.

I like to see nice crisp holes in a target, especially close together like that.

Thanks again.

I have put the cart before the horse on this one,as in hunting report before the rifle report but I will do a full report when I take some photo's in daylight of it.

Number three left the blood trail 500.

Hi NitroX.
All good things come to those who wait.
They found a short cut for your gear hey ?.

Sounds like you went "shopping" to get a trailer load of gear. I'm jealous.

220 grain Woodleighs maybe.

I have 150,200 grain A-Frames but not waisting them on pigs (maybe some).

Also have a fair few RWS 224 ConePoints,187 H-Mantels and ConePonts and a few 200 grain Partitions.

Its a pity I hate Barnes as this caliber probably thrives on them.

I believe Barnes makes some lighter X bullets in 8mm, in the 160 to 180 gr range. I'm keen to try some of these out in mine, and push them nice and fast for use on fallow deer and similar sized game.

I just dont like the fouling from the Barnes.

However a 200 grain TSX @ 3000 fps would be something to behold.

Woodleigh are making a 180 grain Hydro as well.

I think Barnes make a 165 grain MRX. 3300 fps maybe ???????.

Re: Blooding the 8x68s. [Re: FATBOY404]

I've only been running 160gr. and 270gr. TSX's at 2,700fps plus change and the Barnes TSX's haven't metal fouled at all in my barrels. That was in my factory 7x57 BRNO and the .375/06IMP only, though. A pair of rifles is no base for a meaningful test, however, the .375 fouls with 300gr. RN's at just under 2,500fps, yet didn't with the TSX at over 200fps greater speed.

Although they'd probably be excellent for smaller, lighter game, I think I'd have a difficult time shooting a 165gr. bullet in an 8mm. or .338. To me, that's a small case .308 cal. deer/black-bear, goat, sheep etc. bullet weight.

Friend of mine took his mule deer, moose and elk last fall, all with 165gr. TSX's, launched from his .30/06 in Fed. high energy loads - somewhere around 2,900fps MV. He didn't want to shoot handloads and we discovered the Fusion and TSX both shot under 1/2" in his new stainless, walnut stocked Remington - a nice looking rifle. The elk was over 400yards - laser rangefinder. In the .30/06, the .165gr.
TSX a deer, moose and elk bullet, for sure.

So - perhaps they'd be just fine, Neale - but 165 is pretty light for a .32 cal bullet, just the same, imho.

All good points mate.

I think the 8x68 is a 200 - 220 grain grain cartidge.(have some 250 grain Woodleighs as well).

Look, the 200 grain Woodleighs and Speers are killing everything I point it at but I like to play.

If going oversea (Africa) with it I would load 200 or 220 grain A-Frames if they shoot.

The elevated velocities certainly spells out "Premium Bullet" to me.

A 250gr. Premium bullet (for expanssion and deep penetration combined) might be dang interesting as an all-around, say to 300yards. I'd sure give them a whirl.

Makes 3 of us. I spent hundereds of $ trying all the different Barns projectiles in a 270Win and 35Whelen + some in 308 and the only ones that grouped under 6" where the discontined ones with the blue coating and then it was still a 2" group out of a 270. Woodliegh's shoot in all my rifles so I will stick with them when premium bullets are needed.

Neale the more I see of your 8X68 the more I like it and the more I want a twin to the stock.

Cheers

Greg

Greg - the TSX's don't shoot like either the old plain or the older XLC's, the blue ones did in some rifles.

My daughter's .260 puts 3 120 XLC's into 3/8" at 100 meters and my oversize 6.5x55 (.266" groove,) put the same bullet into an even inch.

My 7mm Mauser made 1/2" groups with 160gr. TSX's and my current .375/06IMP makes 3 consecutive 270 TSX's touch, virtually every time I shoot it on target.

Buddy's Rem. .30/06 I spoke of earlier - perhaps in another thread, puts Federal 165gr. Factories into 3/8". These new TSX's are amazingly accurate.

So far, my experience is the TSX's shoot well in every gun I've seen them used in.

I've not heard of a rifle that does not like the newer TSX bullets. The old ones didn't shoot in many rifles, yes, but the new ones seem to shoot in all rifles.

Some mfgr's have try to improve their products and Barnes is one of those.

I start the load development with the TSX's .030" off the lands. This is important. The older plain bullets needed .040" to .050" for a start due to being harder to engrave, due to being solid, without the bands.

Thanks Daryl, but the TSX's were the worst. Now having said that I actualy did something I said I wouldn't do. I bought a box of TSX's. 85 grain 6.8 to try in my 6.8SPC. No idea how far of the lands they are but the top load-can go higher in powder yet-looks promising. 3 shots in to a very tight clover leaf. Horozontal dispersion .35" vertical dispersion .09". Bit of a fickle wind blowing at the time. I will see if they can repeat that or similar next trip to the range.

Might have to try some of the South African GS pills. Anybody used them?

Here is a photo of a 220 grain Woodleigh PP recovered from another pig at 110 yards.

Load was 69 grains of 2209,CCI magnum primer and the 220 grain PP for 2800 fps.

Retained weight was 186 grains (84.4%).
