Ruger No.1 weight
      #184642 - 26/06/11 08:27 PM

Hello Gents,
I`m new to this forum, but I have been reading for a while. I found the time ready to ask for some assistance. I am thinking of getting a No.1 in 450/400NE, but I am a bit worried about the recoil. I wonder if anybody here can tell me why the 450/400NE is so much lighter then the 458LOT and the 375H&H? I really like the 450/400NE, and finaly it is possible to get hold on a rifle for this cartridge for a fair price. I have a Brno 602 custom rifle in 375H&H today, and the recoil on that is no problem, but I have never fired a 450/400, so I just expect it to have a bit heavier recoil. I have no intensions of using a scope on the No.1, so i belive it should work fine, but I`m just not sure. As you can see on the Ruger homepage there are some differense in the weight between the rifles. I was told by a friend of mine that the No.1 have a terrible recoil because of the shape of the stock, but I find that hard to belive since the stock is very classic.
Thanks for any advise.

The shape of the stock on the No. 1 is very comfortable to me. Among mine are a 458 Win Mag and another chambered in 375 H&H. I find them quite comfortable.

On your webpage, what is the caplock rifle in the watermark?

Take care, Tom

Thanks Tom,
What you say about the stock sounds good. I guess the best thing i can do is to find someone with a No.1 in a B5 caliber and test it myself. The only problem is that i don`t think there is a singel No.1 450/400NE in Norway...... I know of a 458Win, so I belive i should test that one.

The rifle you ask about on my webpage is a Danish/Norwegian M1774/41/51 rifle. It startet as a flintlock musket in 1774, rebuildt into percusion in 1841 and got rifles and a new rear sight in 1851. It was actually buildt at Kronborg in Denmark around 1774.

John Taylor, in "African Rifles and Cartridges", has a table that lists ballistics of the African Cartridges and includes rifle weights.

A Double in .400 3" - 9-10 lbs
Single in .400 3" - 8 1/2-9 lbs

Ruger states 7 3/4 lbs, I've had some experience with manufactured rifles weighing alot more than indicated on their tables. Are they leaving about 1 lbs off for a scope, sling, etc?

Kammerherren, I'm looking at the same rifle in the same chambering myself. I also noticed the apparent weight discrepancy on the Ruger Web site, which I find very curious. The Ruger No. 1s do seem to kick a little harder than other designs in the same caliber, in my experience. Nice thing is that a good Decellerator or Limbsaver recoil pad and perhaps a bit of extra weight in the stock bolt hole will soak up a lot of the recoil and allow you to fine-tune the rifle's balance. I've shot a No. 1 that was rechambered from .458 to .450 NE and found the recoil just tolerable, but I don't have the high threshhold for recoil that many other shooters seem to have. I think you'll find the .450-400 very easy to shoot. And of course you can change the performance/recoil level with handloading.
Good luck getting your hands on one.

I Just had a look at Blaser`s kickstoper. Is there any reason why this should not work just as well on a No.1? If there are space problems, there are a shorter model as well. Link to kickstopper: =6&tx_ttnews[backPid]=470&cHash=2ebf1a598c]web page

K: I suspect a coil of lead wire would work just as well and be considerably cheaper.

My No.1 H .450/400 - 3"NE weighs 9.17lbs. scoped with a 1 X 4 Leupold (unloaded). I have also replaced the factory recoil pad with a Limbsaver. I find the gun very shootable from field positions, off sticks, etc. but was glad to get my bench work load development done with 400 gr. loads. I find the gun points very naturally and the stock is conducive to easy recoil management. In addition, I do most of my practice/plinking with 210gr. Hornady .41 Mag. pistol bullets loaded over Trail Boss powder which makes this a most fun gun to shoot. In fact I'm finding myself shooting this gun even more than my .22/250 and 6.5 X 55!!!

I have 5 Ruger No.1's in various calibers and none come close to factory weight specifications (all are over). IMHO this is a great gun and caliber for someone wishing to get into a classic big bore caliber.

I'm with Bill - less 'hollowing' needed in the buttstock. Pedersoli used a 1 pound bar of lead in their double barreled Kodiaks. My .58 had a weight of 10 1/2 poinds, way too much for a little .58 Round Ball rifle.

A pound might be OK, maybe 1 1/2 pounds - wire, I think, is a good idea due to the hole already there and the wire might be easier to remove if necessary.

The recoil of the Ruger No.1 in .450/.400 3" NE is quite pleasant. I haven't had a problem with it, and have introduced several other people to it as their first experience with big bore rifles, and they all found it to be fine.

OK, thank you all,
I guess the best I can do is to get the rifle, and if i feel like it, fill up the stock with lead.
Again, thank you!

This one just a little under 10lbs, 7mm mag with a 8X56 Swaroski for "pigs" at night. It's not really a bother to carry,I'm dropped off close to my stand and sit till midnight...or
