Black snake in Arnhemland identification
      #18438 - 26/08/04 02:10 AM

A question probably for Marrakai, Matt or Bakes but anyone else who may know is welcome.

Saw a "black" snake in Arnhemland. Did not really get agood look but what species would this likely to be?

(and you may say (red bellied) black snake )

Could be a black whip snake. Very fast, venemous but not real deadly. We've had a couple of dogs bitten in kennels by these snake. Didn't kill the dogs but one has some kidney damage and another lost some toes. Some Tiapans can get very dark as well.

It wasn't very long, probably a metre plus or minus.

The colour wasn't jet black but blackish.

Ann

I didn't get a good look at it because it was scared of me ( ) and fled pronto.

Bakes is on the money for sure. Black Whips are very common in the Top End. If you corner them and they get mad, a white fleck becomes visible under the raised edge of each scale, giving them a speckled appearance. They are bloody fast when cranky, so by that stage you should be backing off!

Here's a pinched photo, they can be any colour from olive or light brown through to jet black. Black ones are common around Darwin.

Marrakai

That looks like it. A snake that is "black...ish".

I forgot the story.

"I chanced upon it and held steady. Little did I know it was a species that is the deadliest snake on earth. I read this in some BS guide that is complete crap so it must be true. Even a whiff of its venom results in more than instant death . It was between me and the buffalo. I didn't want to miss any hunting time so poked at it with a stick, risking more than certain death. All while videoing it! It left but little did I know that it had circled around me and was now planning to swoop down on me from behind! But I saw it and eluded it. Later the other guys said I was lucky to be alive and all looked at me weirdly! "

***

Now you are thinking I may a complete dickhead but for those who know what I am talking about ie "another" death defying snake story on the net at the moment .

THE REAL STORY is I was walking back from where "Dr Harrison Death" (yes that is his alias - ie "Steve") had shot a pig back to where Matt had shot a buffalo calf and I surprised a snake at my feet. I yelled out in surprise and it slithered away at high speed to hide in a bush (towards Matt I must say).

Acquiring a milsurp rifle is a lot like dating. If the appearance is pleasing, you pick it up. Upon further examination, if you like the feel and smell of it, you take it home.
