16 bore Fosbery HP
      #184342 - 22/06/11 01:18 PM

I have a vintage 16 bore HP Fosbery bullet mould. It is marked with a "B" inside of a diamond in two places and "16 BORE"

I was wondering who made 16 ga. Ball & Shot guns. I know Holland offered one and I think Lancaster offered their Colindian, who else?

Thanks

I'm sure any of the good makers (who were doing ball/shot guns) would knock out a sixteen bore. J&W Tolley comes to mind right away.

I have two or three 16b double rifles here at my place.
I'd like to know more about your mould and what size bullet it throws.
I would also likely like a few bullets from it to run through one of these rifles.

Cheers

Seems to me, my friend who collected old DR's at one time, had an early John Blissett in 12 bore - fully rifled, with Lefaucheau-type action. I could be wrong on the make - it's been 20 years since I saw his collection. At the time, I was more intersted in the 10 bore Westley Richards shotgun and 5 bore ball and shot gun cap-lock he had H&H re-furbish to new with fitted case made for the 10 bore.

The WR had been fired less than a dozen times, according to H&H. They said "it will loosen up with a bit of use." You see, the action was a bit stiff in operation and that's why Will sent it to them in the first place as he thought it was damaged.

The slugs are about 600 grains, 0.92" long and 0.673" diameter.

Nice looking mould, nice looking bullet.
Let me know if you'd be interested in letting it go.

Cheers

Somewhere I have some castings I made from an original 16 paradox mold I borrowed from JAZ. I will look for them.

Tinker,
If you send a casting to John Millar he will make you a mold in aluminum or one identical to the original in brass.

I can make you up whatever you need.

Check back page in Oct 2011 Handloader Magazine.

Was speaking to Mike Rowe yesterday, apparently the "B in a diamond" stamp means this mold was for a Thomas Bland. Perhaps an "Euoplia" by Bland. Anyone have further info on this type of Ball & Shot?

CCar, that's a nice looking gun!

Do you have any details on its history? I noted the sn 15619. I've got Blands 15666 and 15759 and as best I can determine they were made between 1885 and 1887. Sadly I think most of their records are gone.

I'm not sure how Bland's numbering system worked as far as determining dates of manufacture.

Best Quality 16 bore Top lever hammer shotgun No.11322 was delivered, cased with fittings, on September 30 1889, for 28 pounds and 7 shillings. I have the handwritten receipt.

Mike and I were lusting over a gorgeous Bland one-piece mould in his vast portfolio of originals yesterday afternoon between filing and polishing on projects.

Bob,

I found the link to the Bland by searching online... Here is the whole shebang:

That mould pictured above is wonderful. I've not seen a hollow pointer that screwed into the mould body to hold the pin in place - makes sense, though for the period, instead of using a bushed, wide-head screw and a washer or E clip as today.

CommandCar, based on the link you provided I tracked down a copy of Boothroyd's directory (revised edition). A great reference! Thanks a million.

According to it Blands # 15560-17000 were made between 1900 and 1918.
