50 Days and Counting
      #184340 - 22/06/11 12:27 PM

In 50 days time my big adventure begins, I leave Dubbo on the 9th August and return on the 22nd August 2011.

I thought that it was a timely figure (50) as it has been 50 years since I first wanted to hunt Africa but due to the normal work, marriage, family etc it had been put off, but now at age 65 years and again single and with my health not being as good as I would have hoped I made the decision to make it now before it was to late as one would hate to wake up dead one morning and say ‘Why didn’t I do it before’

I am going with CT Safaris, Chris Troskie for a 10 day Plains Game hunt in the Eastern Cape and Kwa Zulu Natal Provinces which have proved successful with other forum members in the past.

The normal game species is on the ‘Wanted’ list, Impala, Zebra, Gemsbok, Bushbuck, Kudu, Waterbuck, Common Springbok, Black Springbok and one never know what else will take my fancy when I see it.

I originally was going to take a Warthog but of recent the Australian ‘A.Q.I.S.’ (Quarantine) is only accepting completed trophies so I will have to give that some serious thought before I do shoot one.

I intend to have the ‘Skins’ soft tanned and the ‘Skulls’ in the European Skull Mount style of course the Zebra skin will be felt backed. I am intending to use Umlindi Taxidermy of Tarkastad unless I hear of something to the contrary.

The packing has started so that the weight restriction can be mostly adhered to with a little excess baggage but being the one and only trip to Africa that I will make
(unless I win the lottery) a few extra dollars is the least on my mind at the moment.

The paperwork is almost complete ( Just waiting on the Customs paperwork, they only post it to you within 28 days of leaving) my only concern is the 14 odd hour plane trip as I am like a ‘Jack in the Box’ with pain so that will be interesting.

So I will sign off for now and post a report when I return,

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Good luck Jeff !!

Just do what I did on my first flight to Jo-Burg,watch 6 movies and drink two bottles of scotch (375ml)

Then when you get close, panic and think "Shit,I now have to deal with foreign police and firearms".

Never said I was clever !!!!!!!!!!.

Hi Neale,

That gave me a laugh but I'm not a big drinker but will get through it some-how.

Hi David,

Thanks for the thought, memories unlike trophies do not need to be a SCI winner, I will be happy with a fair game hunt the size that I could get within my abilities.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Jeff, good luck on your upcoming adventure. If I may be so bold, since you're going to be in Kwa Zulu Natal, you must hunt Nyala. I promise you won't reget it.

33 days left.

+3 on Nyala. Chris has access to AWESOME Nyala on the conservancy your going to. You will regret it if you see a big one while there and don't take him. My advice, sell a kidney.

Oh, it's traditional Zululand you'll be on. It's not too late for Afro to source a .577/450 large frame Martini for you ......

The time is sure going fast, I have most things in order, I am just waiting on the Customs paperwork as they can't send before 28 days.

Cheers Mate,

Chapuis Armes,

Me, 51 days and counting!

My current plan is Red Hartebeest, Impala (or two) and Kudu. Also with skull mount and pelts done in RSA to save money and aggravation. I want to try to take the Hartebeest and Impala with my H&H .35 WCF double rifle and the Kudu with the scoped .375 bolt action. The double shoots dead on at 100 yards with the fixed blade.

So much planning, so much planning. first of all getting 14 days off work! Gracy Travel has been great with the flights, hotels, gun permits and VIP service. My girlfriend loves that we get all new luggage, cloths and shoes.

It's taken me about two months to get my rifles sorted. You know the drill: get the correct head-stamped brass, premium bullets, load development, sighting for two scopes and finally load 40 rounds each.

Next friday Lisa and I are off to see the doctor to get our anti-malaria pills and a emergency medi-pack. We both are walking about a mile each day and will be up to 3 when we go.

Got my gun insurance last week from Sportsman after being a member of SCI for a month now.

Good luck Jeff.

I hope it is all you hope for and a wonderful experience.

If this is their current policy, they seem to change it every time the wind changes.

I hope you can fit a warthog into your plans. A great trophy and a very unusual pig.

Hi Bonanza, Nitro & Daryl,

Thanks for the thoughts.

Hi Ben,

Your correct there, 3 weeks today, at least most things are now done but getting the weights correct as possible is hard without spending ( should read wasting ) dollars but almost got it right now.

Still waiting on 'Customs' paperwork, when I phoned them last Friday they said next week so here's hoping.

Cheers for now Mate,

Jeff

Just bring back the w'hog tusks if you get one. Make sure the Zebra skin includes the head as the new method of mounting has the head on the cape.

Don't forget to take your gun (yah, sure, but double check everything). Your doc should be able to give you something for pain and sleeping on the jet.

DON'T drink alcohol with the malaria medicine for at least two weeks after taking the last pill. Bad hallucinations can result. Ask me how I know.

Bring at least twice the spending money you plan. Credit cards cost money, yes. Getting a Nyala, or such will stay with you looong after the credit card turns to dust.

Weight restrictions ... Make three piles; one that has what you absolutely can't get by without; one that has stuff you need and one that has all the bits and pieces that will make the trip pleasant.

TAKE ONLY THE FIRST PILE Oh, and don't forget the rifle.

Hi Poprivit,

Thanks for the advice but no need for the Malaria medicine where I'm going so that allows me to get pissed from the start.. I agree with the $$$ aspect and I have done just that but as for taking something to sleep, not sure about that as I take enough pain killers to knock a mule off his feet so that might be a 'Big' ask.

I guess that being the one and only time I get to go to Africa unless I win the lottery or something to pay for a little 'Excess' baggage still is acceptable.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Heading for Africa here in mid August. The waiting period is always excited, getting all gear ready, and setting all hopes up, talking with huntingbodies about what to hunt etc. I`Ll be going for 3 weeks as last time. Next time however I`LL plan a 4-5 weeks hunt.
The more time spend with a classic rifle, walking on African soil, the better!.

Good Hunt Chapius!.

Jeff, I had both knees replaced and as a result I'm very familiar with Oxycontin. Still, valium, ambien, or some such like, will knock the ubiquitous mule waaay into Never-Never. Hell, it made my 19 hour NY to J'burg trip into a nice short flight.

Hi Rigbymauser,

I hope we both have successful hunts, I promise to leave you some.. but all jokes aside it is real fun doing the planning but not as good as the real thing.

Hi Poprivit,

I'm off to the doctors next Monday so I will ask about your 'Sleepy time' but I think that it will be fine.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray
