Boars and .458
      #184240 - 20/06/11 06:27 PM

The Winchester is the flavour of the Month, so took it out after a boar yesterday. found a young boar amongst a mob of buff in some thick channel country. The buff disturbed the boar and I dropped him easily, at around 30m. Storm was trying to get a shot at the stragglers with the 223 but couldnt get a clear shot.
We travelled on seeing a few dingoes and eventualy found a boar that walked onto us. Storm missed a sitter shot at around 30m and the boar escaped into the thick gamba grass.
Continued on and found a mob in a patch of hymenacni, but couldnt get a shot , as it was getting dark we turned around and headed back.
We bumped into the same boar that Storm missed and she tried to get a shot at him and eventualy did and missed him in the thick mimosa. The boar took off and stayed just inside the mimosa and followed it. I took off after him and tried to get in front of him for a shot. Eventual got in front of the boar and waited for him to come into view. He appeared and I swung the 458 onto him and led thru and let go as he hit a thick patch. The 500 grain woodleigh smashed him exiting thru his offside shoulder. The shot was at around 60m and I was wrapped . A good afternoon hunt. Heres some pics Mick

C'mon Rick, explain to all of us what's wrong with a Model 70 Winchester. Other than the fact it doesn't have "H&H", "Rigby" or "Jeffery" etc engraved on the firearm somewhere.

Rick, I'd love to see you post some pictures of your rifles and hunts. "Cough" doesn't seem to me to be a positive comment.

Looking at the Gold writing on the bottom of the Trigger guard, looks to me like a Win Mod 70 Super grade.

I have one, they are good shooting guns.

Put one on the market here in Aust in either 375H&H or 458WM and they seem to get snapped up very quickly.

In any case, practice with big bores on pigs is good practice regardless

My comment was based on the fact that there are unfortunately few around these parts. None other implied.

Kam

More than you think exist, but they get snapped up damn quick IF and when they ever come onto the market.

For my one, it was handed in on a Friday, a mate saw it at 9.15 on a Saturday morning, I drove across town and was there by 10.30 and had purchased it by 10.45. It would have gone by the end of Saturday if I hadn't.

Depending on the vintage of it, most likely Super Express.

Interesting inasmuch that the gun scene here prior to the 70s was very limited (restrictive laws and customs duty etc). I've only ever seen 22Hornet, 257 Roberts, 270 and 30-06 in CRF model 70s. The sole exception being Murray Mitchell's c1938 in 375 H&H rimless magnum.

Mate,

None of mine are safe ballast as I've bought them on the cheap over many years and trusted the right people to get them better. I've had a VIC fella called Zorro P plus sundry stalkers comment on the fact that they get an outing. (Zorro took a real liking to a takedown, near mint 9.5 x 57 MS and the AL mob the same for the Henry when chasing banteng).

As for the Henry I had a sambar near Omeo dead to rights except the case split, like throwing a bloody marble for all the good it did!

regards

You must have lead a sheltered life, Win Mod 70's were push feed in the 1970's etc onwards until the new CRF came out.

I have one in 30.06 (as well as my 458 Super Express) which is like an extension of my right hand and is dead accurate.

^Sorry, my hasty typo. I saw the post 64 push feeders but rarely a pre 64 CRF until the late 1980s. As I don't frequent LGSs regularly I haven't seen the new FN CRF models.

Yep,

Maybe a few BP reloads prior to a real scrubout and that's the result of the then supply of cracker powder masquerading as quality C&H. Anyway there was a pair of them presumably chased out by a dominant stag and they came across the alpine pasture like a pair of carriage horses in harness. (BTW I have a witness to it). I retain the case as a memento of "the best good plans come to nought".

Maybe this year...

This has been a interesting thread. Its a 1985 approx ( G161XXXXXX0. Winchester super express. Well used but functions smoothly. Slick would describe the feed. I like it and it works. Nicer to shoot than my old mark X mauser in a ramline stock.
Heres a couple of pics of action and floor plate. Mick

264

"Slick would describe the feed." is very true.

They are very smooth and also extremely easy to "load from the shoulder" during reloads.

My 30.06 is probably the fastest gun I own for getting multiple shots off in a short amount of time.

Ben- they are elephant hair bracelets. Prohibited import now. When do you get your .458 back. Mick

I was just on the phone to Alex this arvy. He's fixed the stock / bedding problem, and the barrel band sling eye that was free-floating, and is about to start on the feeding issue (mine jammed on the second). I don't want to rush him, because then I'll have to send my No.1 in .450/.400 3" straight down for a tweak, and my wife'll get suspicious! Nah, not really, she's the best missus this hunter could hope for. Anyway, I don't have much experience with the M70 in .458WM, but what little I do have, even though the rifle wasn't performing properly, was very happy in terms of the feel and the accuracy.

My cousin, a Dr. brought a few of the Elephant hair braceletts back after doing a hospital 'tour' & work back in the late 60's to South Africa- somewhere.

They are most interesting pieces. Fit just about any sized wrist & totlly adjustable.

I really like that M70 in .458, Mick. It's special!

I got to shoot an old Super Grade in 1972, that was originally chambered by Winchester for the .450 Watts - which is actually identical to the .450 Lott with 1 very minor change. The load was 600gr. tubing Barnes Solids.
