Ruger No.1 in .300H&H
      #184159 - 19/06/11 01:25 PM

I came to the conclusion that I needed to own something with a little more reach than my other rifles, with future deer hunts or skittish-camel hunts in mind; something that could wear a scope and shoot a little bit flatter. After considering a few good options, and hum-bugging forum members with questions, I decided on the Ruger No.1 in .300H&H. By-and-by the rifle, shells, dies and projectiles arrived, and it was time to sight-in, reload and go bush-walking.

Last weekend it was very cold, and I really enjoyed the unusual predicament of wearing a jumper and beanie for the first hour or so. I checked the usual haunts, but they hadn't been burned-out, and so the donkeys weren't there, save for some sign. The cool weather enabled me to hike twelve kilometres, something that doesn't happen much at other times of the year. Along the way, a fine cuppa was brewed.

Today I planned to hike straight for the burned-out country, realising my enjoyable mistake of the weekend before. Gradually the sign improved in terms of abundance and freshness, and numerous walleroos were observed, often unafraid.

After about four kilometres, I spied that well-known shape, and made-out a small herd of six animals. With the openess of the burned-out country, the rifle proved its worth by doing the trick at two-hundred metres on a jack.

Another cuppa, and it was time to hike back.

Hi Ben,

That one showed the Ruger a little better, it looks like you go prepared for a long hike. You are truly lucky to have such places to hunt near home.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Well done Ben.
Need more info though, groups, loads and velocity.
Did you recover the bullet ?.

Agree with Greg what did the temp get down to ? 15 deg's.(you might have to get some thermal gear).

Thanks, fellows. Greg, I think the temperature in the mornings over the last few weeks has been about seven degrees. Jeff, with the cold weather, I wanted to hike in style and have my tea-brewing facilities handy. Also, it is a new pack, and I wanted to give it a few little trial runs before loading it right up for an overnighter. Neale, I didn't recover the bullet; it exited, even though it smashed the spine (my whoops-a-daisy; not proud of that). I haven't yet got a chrony, but hope to someday. I haven't got a group photo yet, but have been able to put them at the top of a four-inch bull at one-hundred. The load is 70 grains of AR2213SC pushing a 180 grain Woodleigh PPSN, in Norma cases.

Great report and great pictures.
I agree, good shots of the No.1
IMO, the 300H&H is the only No.1 with a proper length barrel. I wish my 9.3 had a 26" barrel too.

7 is perfect hunting temp - longsleeved shirt, sweater or light jacket over a tee shirt - that's about 43F, or so. I like it cool. Around freezing is even better.

Thanks, fellows. Huvius, I'm pretty happy with the shorter barrel length on the .450/.400 3" NE, but I agree there are many zippier calibres that seem to be a bit short-barrelled. But I agree that they sure got it right for the .300H&H.

Thanks for that Ben,
Nice write up, nice pictures, nice weather and a nice rifle.
300 H&H in a No.1, now thats a good combination.
A very useful cartridge and a great companion for your 450/400.
Well done!

Best
Alex

The No. 1 in .300 would be my choice of the factory guns to rebore to .318 or .333 because of the barrel length and sights.
Nice hunting Ben! You really like your Rugers don't you?

Wow! Some fantastic hunting pics here - thank you, Ben, and may there be a lot more great hunting in the future!

Wish we could have your "cold" weather during the Chicago winters, though. I'd give anything to endure your Australian "cold."

Good hunting!

G'day SharpsNitro, I think the pack is a Eberlestock Blue Widow. I don't mind carrying it around a bit during the cold season, but I don't think I will during the hot season.

Hey, Mog! We'll save a donkey for you! Looking forward to it!

Bill, I guess I do have a soft spot for Rugers. When I was seven, I killed my first rabbit with a Ruger 10/22 semi-automatic .22.

Thanks, Mehul! We're funny darn cattle, us humans: When it's hot, we want to be someplace cool, and vice-versa!

My brother just collected another nice boar with the .300H&H; I'll post pictures shortly.

Ben,
Have you ever loaded any of those 240 grain Woodleighs in your .300 H&H ?

Those first three photos are great. That case is sexy and screams easy feeding.
