9.3 Mould Arrves
      #183414 - 11/06/11 09:05 AM

Well a small package in the mail is always exciting and yesterday my Night Owl Enterprises 9.3mm (.368") AL mould arrived.

This is the result of a group buy on another forum and I ordered a twin cavity with one cavity a HP. The mould came with a top punch, Bull Plate Lube, the necessary allen keys and hollow point pin and knob. The design uses .375H&H GC's.

I have not used an aluminium mould before, nor a HP. I have three weeks off in July and plan to spend most of it working out loads for my cast boolits in .416, 7mm and now 9.3.

That looks like a good mould mate.
I've found that a little moly grease under the sprue plate stops galling of the aluminium block face. I do this on my Lee moulds.

It'll be about 280 grains, depending on alloy.

I use just a light touch of a sliver of beeswax. First thing I do with aluminum (actually ALL moulds- aluminum, brass or iron) is to clean them with a toothbrush, soap or degreaser and very hot water, then dry them and spray with a mould prep by Rapine, or a bullet coating moly like MS Moly. Birchwood Casey's also has one.

This prevents any lead sticking, helps to lubricate and helps bullets or round balls to drop easily from the mould.

Good looking bullet.

The Bull Plate lube is for the sprue plate and there is an instruction sheet on how to cure the mould etc.. Once I get some made I'll happily send some out to whoever wants to try them. I would like to get some loads worked out first though.

Making bullets for my 9.3x74R gave me fits. I was losing about 1/3 of my bullets due to gas checks going on crooked. The problem is that 375 gas checks are so much larger than 366 bullets. The solution is to turn a very smooth bevel in the sizer die, so that the gas check is held concentrically when the bullet is started. Any machinist should be able to do this for you.

What brand of lubrisizer are you using?

I can't say enough how good the LBT Blue Soft lube is. If you can get it, it's worth the trouble.

Good idea Tom, a carbide bit should be able to cut the die OK.

Newb question. I know people make their own GC's. Once I work out the dia, surely I can punch some out and then form them ? Anyone have a quick link to making GC's.

I have no personal experience making gas checks. There is a lot of discussion at http://castboolits.gunloads.com/index.php in the gas checks sub-forum.

Heard somewhere about aluminum gas checks from pop cans, but cannot remember where or if feesable.

The lithographic plate that the newspapers use to print from are .012 thick and make good checks.
Making checks and the thickness of material needed is dependent on the gas check shank dia on the cast boolit, and the sizing dia for setting. Thickness needs to be a bit more than sizing dia minus shank dia divided by two. With the Hornady GC at .018 thick I have sucessfully used .021 copper for high velocity loads and 2 thicknesses of .012 litho plate in aluminiun for up to about 1900fps. I did try a .012 and a .006 thickness of aluminium to replicate the .018 of the Hornady but there was not enough strength in the sidewalls to hold to the gc shank and they would come off. Some have resorted to glueing them on but I found that a thicker check of two x .012 was much better. There is no shank deformation with the thicker GC.

I made a rather agricultural GC making system untill I got a Frechex ll from the US.

I used pieces of scrap steel and used broken drill bits (okay I cut the top of a couple to use) and used the drill pres as a vertical lathe and polished them to the required size. As you can see from the pics I did have a couple of tries till I got it right. I ground a slight cup into the end of the drill bit shank to make slight cutting edge. The discs dropped through into a colector jar under the platform

Then it was a matter of drilling a hole that was equal to twice the thickness of the Al material plus the dia of the gc shank of the boolit with a recessed portion at top to sit the disc of Al in.
Another drill bit shank was polished to size.

They were servicable but I was looking for the velocity past where they were effective so used copper in the Freechex tool and because it is so easy I also do the Al checks with it now as well.

That's the sought of idea I had in my head, but it is good to see it works. Thx VG.
