My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!
      #18287 - 21/08/04 02:20 PM

My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

I hunted September or October 2002 and it has arrived only 2 months short of 2 years.

And it looks great! Plus some other goodies.

PS The rest of the heads only arrived in OZ a few months ago and haven't even seen the taxidermists needle yet.

The sun is shining, a photo to come. Here it is.

Nitro

Looks cool! Are you satisfied with the end results? Looks like you're happy as hell with getting the stuff finally.

Sweet. It looks like there was attention to detail around the eyes and even on the neck. Obviously you do not have kids or that zebra would not be on the ground like that . That is an interesting trophy on the left as well. Politician?

Looked at the heading and I was going to say "Hope it's house trained!!"

Well done and a great trophy!!

I'll reply to questions and comments in one post rather than individual thread lines.

***

Kos,

I don't think we ever measured the horns. It was estimated before it was shot. It wasn't estimated as very long but was an old bull with good solid bosses which was my main aim. As the circumstances of trip were eventful and not ideal I was very happy to take and hunt a mature bull.

I am happy with the result. As Matt Graham said on my recent waer buffalo hunt - "If you are happy with what it would look like on the wall ....". And I am very happy with the way with buffalo will look.

Christer,

My water buff will be shoulder mounted as well. Haven't decided its "posture" yet.

Ann,

Now I want to see yours too one day.

475Guy,

Yes very happy. He has a mean look in his eyes. Something to frighten small children with.

Eric,

Mmmm. He will not fit in the planned spot I think. I think an insulated and panelled trophy room/shed/building is in order. But I would like him in my study but too bad.

Mike,

Gary Pegg of Melbourne did the taxidermy of this and all my pevious trophies except for one.

Bakes,

See the next post.

Gibbs and DPhillips,

I hope he isn't house trained. The rest is still to come - another zebra, a second rug this time, two bushbuck, one hopefully full mounted, two more impala, one to be mounted, one to be a skull on a shielf and a waterbuck. See I do need a new building.

On my next safari I want to concetrate on pigs.

Some fun photos.

The first photos is a Zulu shield made from cattle hide with
a decorative long assegai and knobkerrie. Not bad quality and
definitely good enough for a wall display.

The second photo is me acting a twit with a buffalo hide (I
think) Maasai shield. I do not have a proper Maasai spear yet
so am making do.

Decorative stabbing assegai and knobkerre with some nice beadwork.

More space needed on walls.

From AdamTayler posting:

No way. John has attacked me many times for being an anarchist. His respect of politicians is too great to have such a trophy on display He just loves law and order.

John, great trophies. Did you get to shoot the buffalo with your 450 No2 Double?

Mike

BLOODY HELL that middle one's abit dodgy

I have a mate in Fitzroy crossing getting me some Aborigional hunting and fishing spears with woomera, I'm thinking of an Australiana wall. Post a pic when you set the heads and spears/shields out, should look good!

Bakes

I acquired some long throwing spears from Central Australia seven years ago plus some other things, including a wooden "shield" and non-returning boomerangs. At the moment the spears are sitting on top of some curtain rails above a window. Did not get an authentic woomera as I wanted a plain one and they only had painted ones.

What I would really like to get is some of those multi-barbed fishing spears/arrows etc from New Guinea and similar places. THEY look absolutely fantastic.

I remember reading a Wilbur Smith novel where a Matabele warrior killed a charging buffalo with an assegai.

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING!

John,

Why are you wearing clothes in the battle photo? It would be more authentic if you were dressed native.

You will need to get Bakes to pose with the battle implements for that photo.

SaHunter

At the moment ALL of my trophies are filling the lounge room floor having been shifted from Adelaide a few months ago.

I have a shoulder mounted limpopo bushbuck, a shoulder mounted impala and a full mounted chobe bushbuck almost ready to come over from Melbourne too. I think I need to get some up on the walls soon.
