Firearms Museum Visit (~14MB)

Here are photos from a recent stop by the NRA's National Firearms Museum near Washington DC. It was VERY impressive, and I highly recommend it. I'm not a very good photographer and the glass cases played havoc with the flash and auto focus, so these pictures don't do justice. I was especially disappointed that the pictures of the Beretta display didn't come out as they were set in deeply recessed and dimly lit cases (a set of 4 DRs in 30-06, 375H&H, 470, and 600). I counted a total of 6 600 Nitros (two Purdeys, a Holland, a Fraser, Jeffery, and the Beretta). Nice!







Morton Stanley's 4-bore


Single shot Webley 577N

Rodda 450-400

Rising bite 470 from 1924

Not a very good photo as the gun is in a mirror lined case, but a Purdey 600N with a massive beavertail fore end!

Lancaster 4 barreled 28ga c1887

Holland 700H&H

Another Holland 700

Holland 600N from 1985

Holland 577N from 1970

Holland 465 from 1921

Holland originally made as a 458 then rechambered to 460 Guns and Ammo! Bet you don't see too many of those! Granted it was owned by the owner of G&A....

Holland 300H&H from 1951

A Greener 22 Hornet from 1927, a Greener 8-bore DR from 1883, and a Jeffery 600N!

A Fraser 600N

Droplock 12 gauge

An early Army Navy 577N

Lastly, an incredible 577 Snider


Almost all of the above guns other than the punt and 4-bore came from the personal collection of Robert Petersen. I'm impressed that the collection was preserved. The man had taste, I'll say!

That Lancaster is interesting.
The enamel on the .465 is pretty neat too. How did it look up close?


Do they have a demonstration range..?

What a wonderful country to have a firearms museum with a collection like that. Now I know another place I want to visit one day. Among many others in the USA of course!

I too agree though with the comments about it being a pity for all these firearms to be permanently out of use. They were made for being used. Even if only occasionally.

Also what is merely viewing a double rifle, they are also meant to be handled and fondled. Like a beautiful woman!

Does anybody know when the Petersen collection was put on display? It must have been within the past 10 years or so. When I went there in early 2000's it was not there.

Tinker, the enamel looked a bit "different" to my eye, but I like plain old rose and scroll the best anyway. It was certainly well done and unique even if the colors were a bit harsh. I wonder if age has changed them?

Hendrik, thanks for posting that link. I'll have to go back and look over the ones I missed. There were many, many displays focused on the development for guns from an ~1350AD handheld cannon through modern military arms. I also really liked the display of movie guns, some Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart, and more recent films. A few of Teddy Roosevelt's too.

I too thought about what a shame it was that these guns were out of action, but am very glad someone is making an effort to preserve a bit of the art before it get lost to history. I don't think printed words alone can convey the skill that went into these guns for future generations, though I do agree with John that if would be far far nicer if we could handle them!
