Hunting Mountain Pigs with BLASERS 5/11
      #182179 - 22/05/11 08:45 PM

Spent the weekend testing out a new BLASER R8 in 9.3x62 and in the process collecting some pork for roasts and Schnitzels.

I was using an R93 Attaché in 7x64.

We have Zeiss and Schmidt&Bender scopes on them and they perform well (I've used mine for over ten years now). Super fast reload with this straight pull action..

A couple of handy rifles in great European calibres perfect for those mountain pigs.

Congratulations on the hunt too.

Brothers on a neighborong ranch run the R93 and they swear by the system.
I've seen them work up solid 1/4moa hunting loads in numerous calibers.
I've been resisting the open offer to test drive these slick bolt rifles!!

Cheers

Adam.
I like your style.
You use both the "classic" and the most "modern" firearms.

Nice work.

Mechanical changes from R93 to R8 are fairly well documented, but I'm curious: what are the differences, handling-wise, between the R8 and R93?

Taw,
Not sure but will check next time I hunt with Stu.

Shot five more on the weekend but forgot the camera.

What you notice at once is that R8 is wider and accordingly appears more "chunky, bulky..." than R93...FWIW not my cup of the tea - I didn't like removing trigger/magazine part from the beginning, handling one just keeps me further away from R8 - of course to each his own (everyone should handle one and see) - I am keeping my R93.

Bare in mind that the R8 has a 9.3mm barrel and the Attaché has a 7x64 barrel on at the time.
In any case the Attaché is my preference and I also don't like the detachable trigger of the R8.

Adam I had the magazine part in mind - you can see the width on the following pic. Been used to R93 so much - besides I am M sized - I found it cumbersome - someone with X or XL hands may prefer R8 + it may be good in heavy Safari calibers (Lott, .500 Jeff)...

Thanks for the input guys. I'm considering a Blaser in 30-06 and 9.3x62 and have heard the R93 is the trimmer/lighter platform. Don't have a need for the big bores, and I'm not sure how history will judge the decision to mate the trigger to the magazine.

Have either of you had trouble with misfires on the R93? I'm trying to sift internet rumor from fact, and that seems particularly difficult to do in the case of Blaser's safety & performance record.

Handled R8 & R93 Professionals today and don't find much difference in them at all. My biggest dislike is the steep grip angle & massive palm swell of the R8.

However, after seeing Adam's R93 Attache I'm finding it very difficult to stay focused on the Professional models...

No misfires - myself nore witnessed one (R93 is very popular here and near - Austria, Italy...) and I am sure if there would be an issue it would be A BIG BANG (Blaser and specially R93 put many reputable people out of business that are still waiting for a faintest sniff for a payback).
