Very nice original Mauser. Some of the early Mauser sporters were made in 6.5x58P so the cartridge is correct but the chambering of 6.5x58P would not have been normal for the English market for which the Type A sporters were made specifically. The Pattern No.1 has the multi leaf English safari rear sight but does not have the lever release for the mag floor plate it has a release in the trigger bow. I am not aware that any Type A has a lever release whereas most of the Type B Mausers do.

In saying all this your Mauser appears to have the horn forend cap and grip cap specifically fitted to the Type A model.
How have you concluded your sporter is a type A?

Please do not take me wrong as it is a very fine example of the Mauser Sporting firearm but curious as why your Mauser seems to have a mix of features of the A & B Mausers.

Donīt know the sources of your opinion. First you should know that the Type A rifles were not sold exclusively , but mainly to the British market.
You will find many Type A rifles (typical features :express sights, sling eyes and stock with horntipped forends) showing the magazine box with the lever on the floorplate.

Very early ones (before WWI) even had the military type floorplate
I have two in the same configuration as shown here. One in Caliber 8x60 and another one in 9x57 . Both produced in the 30 years.
BTW both reimported from the UK !
The 6,5 x 58 Portuguese was adopted in 1904 by the military as their standard round. And yes they had african colonies and so there was a market to sell them rifles the Brits considered useful.

having a portuguese vergueiro action laying here and waiting this rifle is very interesting for me. I believe the main market for 6,5x58 Kynoch ammo was south africa because they buy 15000(?) 1904 vergueiro rifle's from portugal in WW 1 and this rifles were sold to south african sportsman after the war.
whatever, south africa had a border with angola and mozambique and the portuguese buy a lot of german guns. the idea that this rifle was made for a portuguese sportsman seems good.

very nice rifle I wish to have also

Charles Heyer was the Mauser importer in Nairobi, British East Africa (now Kenya of course). This is clearly a Mauser Type A rifle and in a great caliber.

My Cogswell & Harrison has the lever release with the thick floorplate and is a TypeA.

I think the Oberndorfs could be ordered with any of the three floorplate configurations regardless of the type designation.

the charles heyer address on the barrel makes it more valuable in my eye's. anyone here have old pics from his shop?
the records if they still exist must have been very interesting.

Beautiful! Should have seen service in Angola, and perhaps, also in Goa? If only this rifle could talk . . .
