I'm new at this
      #18073 - 17/08/04 09:36 AM

I have been prowling around your site for a while now. I'm in the process of shopping for a good double. My first love would be a 577 NE 3" but dont know how shootable it is. I've just read to much Keith, and Taylor. I love the "big gun".
I was thinking of a "tweener" 500 NE. More portable (lighter), or somthing like a 450/400 3in. All together different but very shootable and fun.

I know this is a broad range. My budget will be in the 12000 to 15500 US. What is out there and what would ya'll do if you had to have just one.

I would like to go to Africa one day but it is not in my near future. I have a youg family and guns are my passion. I reload and hunt quite a bit. It will be mostly used on Excotics and Hogs and paper, but might tangle with a Cape in the next 10 to 15 years.

Thanks
The buzz

Welcome to the NitroExpress.com forums.

I think a Searcy may just be in your price range for the larger calibre (?) and probably for the .500 and certainly in the .400.

There should be people in your area with one of some description to try and Kalifornica is too far away for the price tag. The safari shows in Jan/Feb would be a great place to see all sorts and handle them if you are a serious buyer.

Merkel and Krieghoff also make .500s and the .500/.416 while not as traditonal is near the .450/.400.

If it was me I would go for a .470 or a .400 (.416) as my first double rifle in a modern brand, but don't let that stop you if you hunger for a grand old .577 3"!

A Searcy PH model will run $9500. and the most classic caliber is 470 Nitro. It is also fairly light for a double, and controllable in quick firing.

E tu Nitro?

Welcome to NitroExpress.com.

It depends on the rifle that you want. If you want a brand new (also known as Reproductions ) than their are 4-5 choices of quality using rifles.

If you want a nice used Brit or Euro Rifle with some history and bloodlines than their are also a number of dealers who specialize in them. I would suggest Champlins, Morris Hallowell and Westley Richards Agency in Butte (or maybe it is Bozeman) Montana as a starting point.

The most important thing is to do your homework and learn what you want before you do any seriously shopping.

I went through this same decision making process. Some comments:

1. You can get a Searcy in 577 for $15K, or a .500 or .470 for $9500. www.searcyent.com As for the 450-400, it is a good caliber for double fans who have gotten too old to take normal recoil. (Am I going to get hate mail for this?)

2. A .577 weighs over 13 pounds, while a .500 weighs 10.5 pounds. After an 8-12 mile fast-paced stalk in Africa at 100 degrees, the extra weight is difficult to deal with. At the shooting range, the weight does not matter.

3. If you want a really big bore, try this 700 NE for only $35K:

Me? I'd rather suck the boogers from a nine year old Dog's nose than own a reproduction.

The next thing that we'll have to deal with is a Plastic Stocked Stainless Steel Double Rifle. Oh, sorry, too late.

Buzz577:
I tossed up an opinion on chambering for the .577 a while ago, suggesting that the 2 3/4 cartridge deserved a closer look nowdays because of Woodleigh's new bullets. Not everyone agreed, of course!

John,

I think the 700 NE is for sale for financial reasons.

$35K would hurt my pocket too.

To much for me too. I think I'll save a while and get a 577 by searcy just the way I want it. With the extended tang and trigger gaurd should be about 16500 will take 2 years and a new car for my wife to get it done. I'll guess I'll keep driving my old pickup for a while, but I might splurge and get new tires. My quest for a double is getting closer!!

You will have a lot of fun with a Searcy .577.
