Bullets for 505 Gibbs
      #18011 - 16/08/04 08:47 AM

I can no longer order bullets from the USA for my 505. IUn fact, the goverment has now classed all bullets over .490 as distructive devices, so I am told and Canadians can no longer import then from the USA.

Are there any others places to import these bullets from? I have heard that Kynock has started up again but do not know where to contact them. Are there any canadian distrubtors of large bore bullets and cases? As I understand that the cases are also banned?

Any help please??

Why not import the best bullets in the world, from Australia?

http://www.woodleighbullets.com.au/

I have fired a rare original George Gibbs .505 (which belongs to a hunting buddy), using Woodleigh bullets. Stout for sure, but very accurate!
Here's a pic of the rifle, FYI.

Just as frightning - a member of my shooting club want's to ban any caliber over .458! He's "concerned" about an out of range 50BMG - so am I. But, I'm also concerned about any out of range projectile. Funny, the 50 BMG shooters are the most careful because they know the awesome responsibility shooting such weapons incures.

Got in touch with woodleigh and they can't help because they are not allowed to sell to individuals!!

But they did tell me who to contact in Canada as they have a distributor here now!

Are there any other manufactures that anyone knows of? In the UK perhaps?

Gibbs

Woodleighs are the best bullets in the world for Big Bore rifles. They are expensive but worth it.

How about a little information on that 505? Is it a true Magnum Mauser?

That is a ringing endorsement. If this implies you are getting free products from Woodleigh, might I say...

P.S. Will be using a 320 gr. FMJ 9.3 bullet in less than a month. We'll see how good it is.

Mickey:
That Gibbs is indeed an original Magnum Mauser, it is owned by a Melbourne resident who posts here as '500 Nitro'. Because of the value of the rifle, he commissioned a replacement stock to exactly duplicate the original, including the add-on padded cheek-piece, so that any damage in the hunting field would not jeopardise the original. It was previously owned by fellow Territorian who shot many buffalo with the rifle, and is pictured with the Gibbs and a big bull in an earlier Woodleigh brochure.

Regarding free Woodleighs, I bet Mickey wishes it was true! ...be like winning the lottery!

I always shoot Woodleighs in all of my Big Bore Rifles and in particular my H&H. I think that a H&H is the best Double rifle ever made and recommend them to all of my many admirers and friends.

I also only use Ziess scopes, Randal knives, Orvis clothing, Filson outerwear and lugage and only fly in Cessna 205's, on floats. They are the very best products and should be purchased by any clear thinking person.

I'll let you know how it works out.

My last batch of Woodleighs cost AU$1100.00 for 700 bullets and shipping to the States. Hardly free, unfortunately.
Yet (he said optimistically}

Who told you that bullets over .490 are considered destructive devices?

Which government has classed the .505 bullet as a destructive device U.S. or Canada?

The Export regulations for the U.S. does not use the term destructive device.

ATF regualtions uses the term destructive device but that law only pertains to imports into the U.S. and Domestic purposes. Even that law exempts rifles like the 505 Gibbs.

Marrakai

I have a feeling Waghorn was the restocker for that 505.

Just to illustrate how versatile Ross is I spoke to him the other night about doing a Weatherby copy, shiny finish, white line spacers, rosewood forend tip and all and he is very keen to do one.

Hello everyone. I've been enjoying the forums here for a few weeks and finally joined up. I'm also from Canada (Alberta) and have run into the same thing. My understanding is that no bullets are allowed to be sold to individuals in Canada from the US regardless of size. Licensed gun shops are allowed once they have gone through an eight week process to get an exemption or at least that's the way it's been explained to me. Some say this is backlash from Canada not joining the war in Iraq and that Canada is listed as a 'potential terrorist haven' or some such. Who knows. Bottom line is they won't ship across the line.

I've recently got some Woodleigh 500 and 550 gr FMJ for my 458 Lott through Ellwood Epps Sports in Ontario. They have a website you can go to for contact info. They seem to be able to get most anything you need.

Hope this helps.

It doesn't have a thing to do with 9-11 or Iraq or being a terrorist haven.

Canadian individuals have not been able to legally acquire bullets from the U.S. since April of 1999, under U.S. Law. That's when the Canadian Exemption to the U.S. export law was changed...at the request of the Canadian government I might add and through Canada's efforts in OAS.

Generally, under U.S. law the bullets must be exported through a registered exporter to a Importer registered with the Canadian Defence Agency.

I have heard of one-time export licenses being granted to persons making a single exportation of a firearm to Canada. I am no longer in the field, so I don't know the requirements for that license or if it applies to bullets.

If you are in Alberta, Leroy's Big Valley Guns in Glasgow, MT can help you export bullets, I'm sure. Send me an Email and I will provide you their contact info. I don't want to post it on this public board and have them get plastered with crank phone calls and spam.

Yes, Ross Waghorn was the restocker of the 505 Gibbs.

That gun tested more Woodleigh bullets in the early year during development
and 3 - 4 year ago was used to test the 600gn PP (Protected Point) bullets.

I'll try to find a photo of it with the Original stock on it.
