Functionality of a Cheek Piece

Does the beautiful ovalish shaped, shadow lined
CHEEK PIECE help one to more quickly get on target;
or does it do any other practical thing for the shooter?
If it does something, why are they absent 99.999%
of the time from bird hunting shotguns, even the best
of the best guns?

Jack,

I imagine its because you sight a rifle and point a shotgun. The cheeckpiece is a fancy aid to line up the eye to the sights.

Not as important with a shotgun.

Of course the cheeckpiece is not needed as other forms of stock design will do the same thing. A cheeckpiece just looks good.

JMO.

Looking forward to an experts opinion though.

Being a left hander who uses right handed rifles,I've never used a cheek piece in my life.

Before building rifles to my wants and needs I always used Remington BDL classic stocks and Rugers as no cheek piece.

Absolutely correct! The properly positioned cheek piece on a double rifle is a very important feature on a well fitted double rifle!
