Who has a Ruger No.1 in .300H&H? What weight bullets?

G'day,

Just wondering who's got a Ruger No.1 in .300H&H, and what weight bullets are best for deer and plains game. Has anybody got any hunting tales with one of these to share? As some of you know, I'm in the throws of pondering to fill my calibre gap with something far-reaching and flat-shooting (by my standards), better suited to deer and plains game, and able to kill camels in a pinch - the cheeky ones that won't let me get close enough. I'm no expert, but I imagine that a single-shot would be fine for most deer hunting and plains game hunting. My larger single-shot has been made to perform quite well on the game here, both great and small. So, a penny for your thoughts on the Ruger single-shot in .300H&H...

I used a Ruger no.1 in .30-06 3 years ago in SA (similar calibre) with 180 grain Nosler Partitions, took an Oryx and Black Wildebeest with one shot each, would use the 200 grain Nosler or the 200 grain Barnes TSX if you can get them loaded for you, best

I wonder what your chances of getting a new #1 to shoot maximum loads under an inch from the factory ?.

I too like the idea of number ones but practically they aren't for me as a lot of my hunting/shooting involves hot barrels and fast bolt work.

As a pure stalking rifle I would like one in 7x57.

I don't have one, but I agree a bullet around 180 to 200 gr is the ideal premium bullet for a .300.

But for pigs and the like, if you do a lot of shooting I would use a 150 gr bullet. I liked the old Nosler SBBTs in my .30-06.

For an all round deer bullet, a 165 gr Nosler Partition would work well. Maybe combine them with a load for the 165 gr Bal Tip and you can choose which round depending on the hunt or species.

For a specialised sambar bullet, I would go for a 180 or 200 gr Partition.

So, is 180 grains / 200 grains overkill for chital or red?

Hello Ben,

IMO, Great rifle in a great classic calibre.

As to over-kill, if you were to hit your Chital or Red in the right place with a good 180 or 200 grainer, it will be just as dead as if you hit it in the right place with a good 150 or 165 grain bullet.

For general use I simply choose a suitable bullet (ie not too hard and not too soft) medium to heavy weight for the calibre, work up a good shooting load with that bullet, and then use it for any and everything one might use that particular calibre for. Concentrate on shot placement. Has worked perfectly for me to date. The only time I have changed that formula is if I have wanted to work up a load for a specific task, and then I simply choose the best projectile for that task, work up the load and go from there.

Fatboy - as to getting a No.1 to shoot an inch from the factory, I'd be pretty confident

Another thing I have found is that a rifle does not have to be a sub MOA performer to be a great hunting rifle, even at extended ranges. It's nice sure, but not mandatory. What is mandatory is that the rifle will put its first one or maybe two shots from a cold dirty barrel in the same place, consistently, every time. As Ben knows, my field test is clay targets. If I can consistently break a clay target at 200 yards or so, under field conditions, (no benchrest and sandbags etc) then I am very very confident in the rifle. The hunting part is then up to me......

Still think it's a great choice Ben.

As I said in my waffling post, I would choose a 165 gr Nosler Partition and/or Ballistic Tip and it will handle everything you hunt, except maybe buffalo and similar sized animals.

You might get pass throughs with the heavier bullets from increased penetration, but usually not a problem.

BTW I used a 200 gr Nosler Partition on Hog Deer in my .30-06.

Good shooting to hit a clay target at 200 yards from a field position.

We used to make good shots at that distance on the farm, but that was with a .22/250 from the back of the ute, often with bi-pods. After years of shooting my big bores, 200 metres seems an awful long way, but I am looking forward to the challenge.

Clay targets are good practice and fun to shoot, no mistake if you hit it or not, and you cannot be concerned with where it was hit....because it broke.

Last time I shot clays at 200 yards, from a sitting position, it took 7 shots to break the 5 targets I'd set up. Even though I missed twice, the missed shots were awful close to the mark, each would still have been a dead deer. I really like that rifle.

Just a plain Jane 4x Pecar, targets were small but crystal clear.

My late friend, Richard L., back in the 1990's won the Burns Lake 1,000 yard winter BR competition with a Ruger #1 in .300 H&H. His load was H4350, using a 168gr. Sierra Matchking. Yes, his group was an annomoly and never to be duplicated, especially with a single shot rifle - however, he won with a group of 1 5/8".

I do not know the scope used - probably a 3 to 9 Bushnel -

165's for deer specific - if premium bullets- Partition, TSX or Fusion, they do for Elk and Moose too.

1 5/8" at 1000 yds, now that is serious shooting, beats me at 150

A clay would be difficult at 200 yds with open sights, wouldn't it?!

Amazing. An anomaly but a group is proof it was perfect shooting, with probably perfect conditions.

1-5/8", Struth!!!! An anomaly, but what an anormaly.

I'd be stoked to get 1-5/8" at 200 yards let alone 1000.
