Load development in 19th century nitro rifles.
      #179113 - 15/04/11 07:32 AM

I want to bounce off my data against the collective wisdom of this unique group of men to verify my load.

My Holland & Holland (Webly) .303 rifle was made in 1896 and probably used Whitworth steel barrels, and thus was a very early smokeless DR. In 2002 it was re-chambered to .35 WCF for whatever reason.

My current load is 46gr of R15.

I derived it this way:

a) the max pressure for the 303 is 43 cup, which is the min pressure for the .35 whelan.

b) the .35 WCF is very close to the .35 whelan in dimension minus 4 grains volume.

c) my load is min load whelan - 10% or 46 gr of R15. I've got to believe it's below 40 cup.

d) velocity is measured 2200 fps.

Thoughts and comments welcomed.

Bonanza,
Is this the same rifle you show under "Small & medium bore doubles - again!"?
If so, then forget my previous entry.

At what range and I assume the two barrels are on the respective sides of the group? Or mixed?

Just asking for clarity.

If say at a minimum of 50 yards, looks good to me.

What is it doing say at a 100 yards?

Some German data may be helpful: The .35 Winchester is very similar in volume and other respects to the shorter, but fatter 9x57R.
An older, 1991, German proof table lists copper-crusher average maximum pressures for the .35 Win as 2700 bar, the 9x57R at 2500 bar and the .303 Brit. at 3200 bar.
The newest 5th edition of the DEVA book "Wiederladen" uses the electric transducer pressures of the 2000 proof tables. These do not list the .35 Win. anymore, but the .303 @ 3650 bar maximum, the 9x57R @ 2800 bar.
For the 9x57R it lists these pressure-tested loads, all giving a .358" 250gr Speer bullet 2200fps: 46 grs Norma 202 = 2150bar; 46grs IMR 4895 = 2386 bar; 47 grs VV N140 = 2341bar.
As your RL15 is slightly slower than any of the DEVA listed powders, your load should be well inside the .35 Winchester limits, even in a rifle that old.

kuduae,

Excellent. That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for taking the time to do the comparative analysis, listing the exact numerical grains of powder and pressures.

Based on you email my loads probably are around 2300 BAR, which I am satisfied with.
