ruger no.1 caliber
      #178999 - 13/04/11 07:07 PM

gents im having second thoughts as a few of you know im looking at converting my ruger no.1 to a .470 nitro express but im having second thoughts on the caliber.the old man keeps mentioning the .470 capstick and the .9.3*74 then the new issue of australian shooter arrived early this week with an article on a ruger no.1 being converted to .450 nitro.there are so many great calibers that are screaming out .450/400 nitro express,.458 lott,.500 nitro,.500 jefferys,.505 gibbs,.577 nitro,.585 gma.im thinking for this project i stay with the .470 nitro express and down the track build something bigger any thoughts would be welcome.

good hunting

Whichever calibre takes your fancy is really the answer. My .450/.400 3" NE is fine for all the above-mentioned game (although I haven't yet hunted camel with it). This game is never so much about need as it is about fun, so pick a calibre you fancy and go for it. Perhaps a rimmed one might be better. And because my calibre and the .458L are available pretty cheap new from the factory, you might want to choose something other than those two.

spot on ben it really is about the fun just getting out there with a rifle in a caliber that you are happy with and doing what is was designed to do as we have all followed you with your .450/400 sure it may be what some would consider TO BIG for pigs but bugger me your outings have looked fun

Hello grantc,

Can't argue with Ben's results with his 450/400, that calibre and the No.1 seem to be an excellent pairing

The 450 NE would be well worth a look. I have a No.1 in 450 NE and love it (still haven’t blued it yet though, must get that done soon). At 50 yards with open express sights, it shoots 500 grain Hornady's and 480 grain Woodleigh's into ridiculously small and very satisfying groups, like less than an inch. 480 grain cast lead bullets also shoot really well at 50 yards. At 100 yards with the jacketed bullets and express sights it groups a pretty consistent 2-1/2 inches. I cannot see (or shoot) as well with open sights at longer ranges so I'm very happy with 100 yard results like those.

There are heaps of different jacketed .458 calibre projectiles out there to choose from, not to mention the options should you decide to have a play with cast lead bullets. Loading those straight sided cases is a snap and case life is excellent too.

I use my 450 mainly as my group 2 rifle at our Big Game Rifle Club shoots, but quite often I've been known to take it out after wallabies and rabbits. It carries nicely, it balances properly, it shoots well and it's comfortable to shoot. It's just a really nice rifle.

Turns out to be a pretty fair sort of a rifle for feral cats too

Best
ALEX

Alex, hunting rabbits with this sort of gear would be a hoot, and I hope to do it this Christmas coming!

Grant,
Thanks, suppose I was being a bit cheeky in asking the question, but rarely do you ever get feedback from articles, you just don't know if works or not.

My 450 is nice to shoot, I've only ever shot it with the blackpowder loads, as I have a 450 Ackley, 416 Taylor and a 416 Ruger for Group 2.
I wanted it to have the slightly "English Stalking Rifle" look to it (on a budget) so went with the longest barrel we could off the shelf, and a lighter profile. Ended up being very nicely balanced.
I've now gone to AR 2207 as the priming powder and a 300 grain cast bullet (a bit closer to the original bullet weight) and it seems to be performing better than ever.

The only other modification I had done, which seems to be commonplace, is to have the top edge of the safety filed back a little, to let the empty case clear the action better.

Ben, Thanks for the kind words, sorry I missed catching up with you a few weeks ago, work got in the way! Would have been a little wet around the place as well. I'll be back up in June sometime.

Regards,
David.

Grantc, IF you do decide to go with the 450 NE then a simple rechamber of a 458 WM barrel is all you need to do. The 450 will clean up the Winchester chamber just fine.
I've got one done and it's enroute.

I had a #1 7mm Mauser and found a 458 barrel to do the conversion.

Just barely.... The Ruger .458 chamber is generous.

How right you are Mr. Fewless.

I was originally planning to go down the re-chamber a 458 path for my 450, until I removed the barrel and measured the chamber and slugged the bore. The factory chamber, namely the belt recess, was rather too “generous” to be cleaned up with the 450NE reamer, and the bore slugged out at .4605. So I bought a new barrel (it's bore measured out at .4576) and fitted that up instead.

As this rifle was going to be shot a lot (BGRC) rather than be a main hunting rifle, I used the same profile as the original barrel. Kept a little more weight that way. Still balances right though.

With an island base for the rear sight, it really carries nicely in the hand. My hand just wraps around the barrel and fore-end just in front of the receiver. Really comfortable there as there is no quarter rib to get in the way.

I made a matching island fore-sight base for it too. Looks nice.

Changed the safety slide to one of mine too.

I know I know, it's not all blued, but it's my own rifle and I have not gotten to blue it yet. Customers work always comes first and mine are patient, they will wait their turn

Best

Very nice Alex, I like the little island front sight base, cool.

Alex , That is great work as usual , really like the sights & bases !

450 Ackley-David , I read the article to , it was very good , as were your others , really good to read some thing different , good photos to .

Only one thing , I think you should have called it "Loading the .450 BPE - Black Powder Express "

I think a rechamber to 45/120 would be good to on a 45/70 & keep the big rim ?

Thanks

Alex,

Nice work. I have a couple of questions for you. Do you have to modify the breech block or receiver channel to clear the rim of a 470? (or 500NE) case? Can you ship one of your safety slides to the US? I'm assuming it will need to be fitted by a smith.

Thanks.

Sharps
