Safari in Africa for “Father” & “Son” Custom CZ550's
      #178548 - 08/04/11 12:53 PM

It is now Official, “Father” & “Son” finally is going to Africa.

For those members who have followed my story about the building of my 2 Custom CZ550’s, One in 30.06 and the other in .375 H&H which were made by Alex Beer in Tasmania (Metalwork) Ross Waghorn in Melbourne (Stocks) and the engraving by Ron Croxon (Tamworth) will be pleased to know that they are going to be “Blooded” in the best place ever.

It is now Official, I will be going on my first ever “African Safari” and although not after Dangerous Game, It will be 10 species of Plains Game in 10 hunting days and a couple of extra days for flying in, flying out etc.

The hunting will take place in 2 Areas, the Eastern Cape and the Kwa Zulu Natal Province in South Africa.

I will be hunting with Chris Troskie Safaris who have been recommended by other members including Tophet1 and I leave on the 10th August and return on the 21st August so here’s hoping that all goes to plan and the hunt is successful.

The amount of paperwork involved is a surprise to one who has never hunted overseas before but I am steadily working my way through it all and stopped for a short break whilst doing this report.

It has been a long time coming, in fact I wanted to first hunt Africa when I was 13 or 14, that’s over 50 years so I can’t be blamed for rushing things.

I will keep everyone updated as to how things are progressing and of course the mandatory photo session when I return.

So I will leave it at that for now,

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

.

Thanks 4seventy and Ben, As I said, I have wanted to do this for over 50 years and if I had waited any longer I may have fallen off the perch before I could have achieved my desired adventure.

Cheers,

Jeff great news that you and your son, are heading over for a safari. Or are the two rifles, the "father" and "son"?

A couple of nice rifles to enjoy hunting with as well. And classic calibres for Africa too.

Make sure you try for a nyala if you hunt KwaZulu Natal. The best place for them.

What other game are you hoping for?

Eastern Cape might also be good for black wildebeest?

I think you deserve it, to fulfill a 50 year ambition.

Hi John,

I wish it was my Son but alas it is the Two Custom rifles recently completed. Nyala is not on this trip, just the following.:

2 Zebra, 1 Shoulder Mount, 1 Tanned Skin.
2 Impala, 1 Shoulder Mount, 1 Tanned Skin.
1 Kudu, European Skull Mount, Tanned Skin.
Gemsbok, European Skull Mount, Tanned Skin.
Bushbuck,European Skull Mount, Tanned Skin.
Waterbuck, European Skull Mount, Tanned Skin.
Common Springbok, European Skull Mount, Tanned Skin.
Black Springbok, European Skull Mount,Tanned Skin.

There will be a couple more but as usual, a wait and see approach.

Cheers for Now,

Jeff Gray

Hi John,

At the moment Nyala is not on the books (Yet) but I believe Chis does have a lot of good areas and I am working through it step by step with him. He has just had another idea and will get back to me on it but the paperwork is a real "Killer" for a first timer.

I also told Chris that it was your advice/guidance that led me finally to him so you may get a "Reward" on your next visit, you know a "Big Kiss" or something...

As for selling a "Kidney" never thought of that, how much would I get.

Anyway, I have started and as J.H. said that after 50+ years I deserve it.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff..

Hi Neale,

Thanks for that, I know that it must seem strange me not going before this but "That's Life" I guess. At least you know that your rifle is going "Back to Africa" and hopefully it will be as positive for me as it was to you in it's other life.

I think that both the Zebra and the Kudu, possibly the Gemsbok will be will be it's targets with the remainder with the 30.06. Well that's the game plan at the moment but who knows what will be present itself as a target with a different rifle in one's hands.

Cheers for now Mate,

Jeff

Looks like a lovely and comfortable camp.

The camps are often nice, have swimming pools etc, but one never uses them! As as much time is spent out hunting as possible.

A nice table with good food, a nice wood fire either inside or outside, for good conversation and drinks at the end of the day, is a big plus.

Congratulations !!!

You are gonna have one of the best experiences for any hunter... the arrival to Africa... the land of dreams.

Anyway... i will tell you in advance. Once you arrive to Africa, you have a high posibility to be poisoned by the "African Venom" and you will return year after year as an addict...

Good hunt !!

As to planning what rifle you will use for what.
You will screw it up as in ,the Zebra will be shot with the 30-06 and the Impalla with the 375.
It's called Murphy's Law.

Chris's wife Sabina is a gun cook so you won't go hungry. Make sure you request the Tunisian Meatballs. They are to die for.

Hi Cinghiale,

Thanks for the thought, I really do hope your right. Chris the P.H. feels confident that all will be well.

Hi Chemarg,

Again thanks for the thought, it is a magical place and can only hope that I get that sought of
"African Poisoning" not food.

Hi Neale,

I guess that your right and that was the hope / plan but I have loaded for both rifles to have a good cross section of projectiles so if what you say happens, all will still be good.

Hi John,

I will request that one for sure, as long as they are manufactured "Balls" that will be Ok, forget the "Sheep" one's.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Hi John,

I mentioned to Chris about the Tunisian Meatballs and he said that they were exactly as you described so as long as there are no sheep on the site I'll be happy.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff
