this is a M 98 in 8x33 kurz, made in 2006 by cut 24,6mm out of a mauser action

oal of the rifle is 98 cm and the action looks absolutly clean. I remember seeing such work only for 22lr conversions before. how are the parts welded together, what for a method?

8x33. Interesting little case.

What are the specs on it and what comes out the other end ?

What did you use it for ?

its not mine, just interest me because of the short welded action and if this is realy safe

the 8x33 kurz is the cartridge for the sturmgewehr 44 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StG_44
he claims with the 7,8g(120gr) Impala LS bullet a Vo=750ms E0= 2188J E100= 1600J
GEE= 150m

I'm not a fan of buggered around with Actions at the best of times.

As for safe, I thought Europe had proof laws ??????

Safety is certainly no problem at all, because the bolt head and receiver front ring are untouched if welding is properly done and the hardness of the bearing parts unaltered.

How is it done ?

There is a good procedure shown in Kuhnhausen :" The Mauser Bolt actions " p.199

If it makes sense ? I don´t know . If properly done it is a lot of work.

In tha case shown here the bolt body looks very rough (Maybe a consequence of improper welding technic) and the solution for the extractor looks somewhat primitive.

For hunting purposes the 8x33 cartridge is nearly useless

For plinking it is good enough.

so its possible to weld the parts together without a new heat treatment for the whole action after?

I dont think that the 8x33 kurz is completly useless. its so good on roedeer like any other cartridge in this class. small game like fox is no problem and the cartridge can be loaded to a very high precision.
it seems the little round is also legal on chamois in austria.

When TIG welding the parts together the hardness of the wearing parts remains untouched so that rehardening the new ensemble - for safety reasons - is not necessary.

I have seen a Mark-X shortened so much that it was only long enough to feed .45ACP rounds,which was intended from go. would be a nice little rifle if it also had a silencer. A real fun gun IMO.

Gun world magazine ran a big write up on cut and shut mausers in the late 80s. I would love one shortened just right for a .308 win. But cost and the existance of short Brno 6oo series makes me wounder, WHY?????

I do like the leangth of the bolt handle on that 7.9x33. I think the rifle would be more user friendly if it was 7.62x39 or a 8x39 wildcat.

How do you get around the cartridge case issue/problem??????

this is never a problem, Prvi make brass and ammo http://www.prvipartizan.com/ppu_mannlicher.php

brass is easy to made from 8x57 IS
