Wood Duck (Maned Geese), still making babies!
      #177946 - 30/03/11 05:51 PM

G'Day Fella's,

A bit over twelve months ago, I was offered a position as a Fitter & Machinist (etc), at the main university (ANU), here in Canberra.

For those of you that don't know the place, it is a Ten Minute walk from the CBD of Canberra.
As a hunter I just love working in this place because of the amount of wild life (Ducks and Rabbits mainly), that abounds on campus, not to mention the good lookin young women!!!
Anyway, there are hundreds of Wood Ducks here and earlier this week I seen two new hatches of young ducklings. The first lot of 6, had only just cracked the egg shell and the other lot of four were about half grown, with lots of feathers.

I don't think I have ever seen ducklings at this time of the year before and it's an indication of the unseasonal wet weather (read; fantastic growing season), we are having!

Hope this is of some interest

Doh!

Plus the security of the place.

Ducks just seem to know when it is all good / coming together.

I agree, we have a campus of LaTrobe North of me and every time I go there the Woodies are out feeding, not a care in the world.

It is possible to happens more often but the ducklings are killed off for some reason? cold or frosts? Therefore natural selection to maintain the "hatching season"?

Deer fawns for example do not usually survive. So does or hinds from late birthing mothers rarely survive to adulthood.

BUT this year is a strange one. We were only talking about it today that the vines look like they will loose their leaves very late in Autumn. Will see what happens.

Must be all the moisture from global warming (ie predictions of drought), and carbon keeping things green (I thought there were predictions of desertification)? Ha ha.

I'm seeing lots of wood ducks here in Virginia too, although our wood duck is a different species (and genus, for that matter) from yours. It's very wet, and they are moving into areas where I don't usually see them They are the most beautiful bird in the state.

Tatume

Wood ducks have expanded in numbers here in Aust, partly because of farms / grazing and the dams that have been
dug in paddocks (often nice green grass on the edges).

Hi Homer,

My father served on the USS Guided Missile Cruiser Canberra. As a child I had the privilege of going on board a few times. The katana displayed on the crew mess deck particularly impressed me. The USS Canberra was the only U.S. warship to be named for a foreign place or foreign ship. She was originally named the Pittsburg, but was renamed before she was launched after the Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra was sunk. When the Canberra was decommissioned her ships bell was donated to the Australian National Maritime Museum, where it is on display now.

Nice to see the good growing conditions, are wide spread across the country!
Tatume, isn't it a small world!!!
Also, thank you for the history lesson, as I wasn't aware of the USS Canberra!!!

Best Regards & Doh!
