Are Merkel sourcing actions for rigby?

It is my understanding that both the Merkel double rifle and the Rigby use the 20 Ga Merkel action as the starting point. I understand that the cross bolt is enlarged and the frame hardened more. I believe that Rigby uses the Pac-Nor barrels as does Searcy.

I did not know that rigby was sourcing merkel actions unitll now, but I heard that the merkel shotgun was built on the merkel rifle action - not the other way round. Anyone have the definitive answer?

The Rigby action certainly looks like the MERKEL action which is an Anson & Deeley action. Butch Searcy says he has had them apart, and they are definately Merkel box locks! Contrary to the thinking of some, that isn't a bad thing. The Merkel actions are very strong, and there will be no problem with any rifle made on them, because of the action, as long as the cartridge is one common to double rifles! The action simply isn't a worry!

Hey, I think it's great that a company like Merkel is willing to source out parts. It improves the economy of scale and can make a previously prohibitively expensive rifle “affordable” to us meager working folks.

But Bonanza, the Rigby costs more than double what the Searcy costs...and the Searcy is made from scratch!

That is true, and the Searcy is a better rifle, IMO! The reason the Searcy is better than the Cal. Rigby, has nothing to do with the Merkel action, however!

Rigby doubles use a re-worked Merkel 20 gauge shotgun action.

Some time ago I contacted GSI (merkel importer) about importing double rifle in-the-white (for stocking & finishing here in the U.S.) We had several conversations over a month or two, but it didn't work out.

They indicated definitively that they were importing the actions for 20ga shotguns for resale to Rogue River (now Rigby)... Furthermore, they were unable to export "rifles" unfinished (apparently b/c of German proof-laws) but were able to export the shotguns unfinished - it was about a year or so back and I don't recall the exact reason for such. But the answer to your question (from GSI) is Yes, Rigby is/was using Merkel 20ga actions.

Recknagel (the German maker New England Custom Guns rifle sights) also makes a similar actions for sale to the trade... they even make the locks for a sidelock.
