Regarding Ammo
      #17750 - 10/08/04 03:54 AM

I was looking into the cost of ammo for some of the older rifles like 450NE 450/400 450#2 475#2 465NE, 470NE, ... , etc. in case I ever wanted one. The situation seems pretty dire as the cases are mega $$$$ if even available. I was seeing prices like $100.00 for 20 and most were "out of stock, no backorder" 470 cases were available, but still $$$$.

This begged the question: why not chamber new guns in cases like 45-120 or 50-120 as they are readly available due to the huge popularity of cowboy shooting? Also isn't the 50-120 the same as the 500NE anyhow? I would much prefer a 500NE over a 470 as the bullet sellect in .50 is much wider. Why not a 458 lott?

45-120 and 50-120 are somethink smaller than 450 NE and 500NE, its a lot of work to make this cases ready for the british guns( of course everything is possible).
But their exist a wildcat based on the 50-120 case with 500 NE ballistic. you find it in cartridge of the world.

If you build a double on the 45-120 or 50-120, all you end up with is a very expensive oddball that no one wants. The savings on brass will be more than eaten up by the added cost of building the gun.

As for brass, Midway will sell you a box of 20 470 NE brass for $32, or 500 NE for $34 (on sale at this time). That's not very expensive when you are talking about feeding a rifle that cost $10K+ at least to build.

The point I was trying to make is there seems to be trouble brewing for the classic cartridge (with the exception of the 470) shooters. I would be reluctent to spend 10-15K on a nice british gun if it cost a forture to shoot. I have a .375 H&H double that cost me $0.35 per shot. I really would have wished the new .400 H&H or 500/416 was available when I bought my gun. I'd like to hear from you gents shooting the classics and how you are dealing with the shortage of cases.

With the closure of Mast Technology's BeLL brass making, there is about to be a very big shortage of good brass for our nitro express rifles. BeLL was/is great brass. I'm hording what I have left for my 450/400 3 inch.

the fellow who bought Mast's machinery Jameson isn't planing to produce Nitro Express brass.
