Things are slow down here. What have you hunted lately?

Archery seasons here in the states are just around the corner. I leave for my archery elk hunt in just over 2 1/2 weeks. I am doing some last minute adjustments to my bow now. I'll be ground shipping my gear to a buddy in Colorado instead of trying to take it all on a plane. It is just to much of a pain these days between security & weight restrictions.

I'll be hunting elk from September 3rd through the 12th. I'll be in the Wemninuche wilderness area of Soutn Western Colorado. Eleven miles in..........with no one but elk, bears, Bighorns, Mountain Lions & Coyotes around I can't wait.

Deer season opens up here in Pennsylvania the begining of October. I'll be able to hunt deer with my bow from then through teh late season that ends in mid January.

What a great time of year!!!

Good luck everyone!

If I get a moose in September there won't be much hunting for me after that. The freezer will be pretty full. Maybe one deer....

Good luck on that buff!!! How dangerous are they? Anythink like the African variety? Or more mellow like the American buffalo/ Bison? I bet you end up with lots of meat after bagging one of those big boys!! Good luck, I hope to see some pics to go along with the story

BTW

I used to shoot 2419s up until last season when I switched to carbons. Not for the speed (although I did pick up several fps) but more for the durability. I got tired of getting small dings in arrows while practicing. Not enough to be noticable, but enough to throw that arrow off target & open my group. With carbons I have not needed to buy an arrow since last year. The only draw back is getting clearance from my 4 degree helical is a lot harder with the tiny 5575 carbons. My 2419s cleared the rest with no problems at all. I guess there always has to be a drawback

The Aussie buff has the potential to cause harm, though I have not been on the receiving end of any.
From most accounts they do not possess the temperament of their African cousins, though I have also heard a few tales that would counter that argument.
Getting to within bow range of a bull definantly gets the pulse racing, it's the closest we Aussies will get to getting our a$$e$ stomped.
On the occasions i have been fortunate enough to have a beast at my feet all the meat has been salvaged, utilized by the local aboriginal community (only after claiming the choice cuts of course )
2419's sure are broomsticks compared to the more common & recent shafts now available. How have they performed on the beasts you've harvested? I'm thinking of trying Axis shafts I wonder if their all that they claim them to be. lol.. I'm forever stuffing about with my gear, archery/bowhunting sure has a way of entering your system..addiction soon follows

Standoff with a bull, just prior to claiming him with one arrow at 20 odd meters.

Bull taken a decade ago...

Great pics! Thanks for posting them. Looks like some fun hunting We do need to hear some stories

I have had no problem with penetration with my carbon arrows. I still blow right through deer shooting my Mathews Ultramax @ 66 pounds. Elk are the same as long as you do not hit the shoulder......those big shoulder blades stop all arrows Best bet is to hold back a bit & hit the soft double lung region. In which case they die as fast as deer.

Looks like there are some good opportunities for the archery hunter down in OZ. How many of those duffs can you take in a year? Is the license expensive? How about the cost of a tag for us crazy American archery hunters LOL

Thanks for the Kudos guys; the first picture was taken during a hunt last year. After spying the bull from a distance I placed myself in an ambush positioned as the bull gradually feed towards me. Out of the blue he glanced in my direction and spotted me from about 80 meters. I was confident that was the last I would see of him as most of the bulls we encountered bolted once spooked. As expected the bull bolted though after traveling about 50 meters he about faced and commenced to march in my direction, not having any suitable trees to climb nor rifle backup I wondered why the hell I now found myself in this position. Reaching approx. 20 meters he turned and bolted once again only to turn and pace in my direction yet again.
By this stage I was at my wits end, the whole time the buff had moved in a semi circle from my right when I first encountered him to my extreme left, obviously attempting gain my scent, it was here were a shot opportunity finally presented itself. As the beast quartered away I was able to place an arrow in the short rib, the bull made a quick dash only to travel 40 odd meters and expire in less than a minute. The whole episode lasted 12 minutes and was captured on video.

There are no restrictions as to how many buffalo are taken or when they are hunted, also neither tag nor license fees. Though the hurdle for self guided individuals is gaining access to hunting locations. Alternatively there are many guides located throughout NT that offer guided buffalo hunting.
Are you planning a trip down under IronBuck? If so we have great bowhunting opportunities for many species.
Great to hear you have had good success with your Gold Tips they are a popular arrow amongst many hunters here in Oz.
Cheers.
Here's some more pics enjoy!

Thanks for the details & added pics! I am always thinking about new places to hunt. I still need to get to Africa & Alaska. I have only hunted in the lower 48 so far. I think an Austrailian hunt would be great! Those bulls sure do look exciting I'll have to add that to my list. All I need is ............time...........& $$$$$$$$$$$$
