It's here!

Today is a great! I have finally entered the hallowed halls of big bore ownership. I Picked up my CZ 550 Safari in .375 today. The rifle is beautiful. There is only one slight ding on the right side next to the rear sight. (I have no idea how it got there) other than that, the wood is very nice. It is lightly colored for Turkish walnut, with a tight straight grain that runs tip to butt and just enough fiddle-back in the wood to give it some style.

Next week she goes to the gunsmith for glassing and maybe a second crossbolt, a better set of sling swivels, and a better recoil pad (The one that is on her now is very cheep.), scope mounted, I think that the action could use some polishing and maybe some trigger work… Isn’t love grand? Ill post photos as soon as I get a chance.

Which gunsmith did you use? Were you happy with the work? I'm getting that exact same rifle and am looking for a gunsmith to do the extra work. Thanks

I used a good friend of Mine in Hawkins, TX Dan Eaken working out of Morgans Gun Shop. He mainly builds custom stocks, but he did me one solid job!!! I am happy.

I hope you shoot it before it goes to the gunsmith. It must be allowed to sing occasionally.

Oh yes I did! And she sang like a champ. However after the work, I’m not sure that I am worthy. I never though a big bore could be soooo tame. I wonder if I should have gotten the .416 Rigby, or just rebarrel her out to .404 Jeff…

It is a big jump in fierceness going from a 375 H&H to a 416 Rigby...the pussycat suddenly has claws and teeth...

That is what I hear. However I’m just enough of a knuckle-head to want to try one out. However I didn’t have enough cash to put my curiosity to the test!

HauptJager:

I'm in the process of finding a person to make a stock for me. I'm awaiting delivery of a barreled action in .416 Rigby and want to have a stock formed out of a beautiful piece of Turkish Walnut that I have.

You mentioned that your friend is a stock maker. Do you have any more information/pictures of his work? I want it formed in a traditional H&H or Purdey pattern. Any help you may supply would be very much appreciated.

Regrettably at this time I do not have any photos of his work I’m somewhat out of the high tech loop . However the Chasseur has seen Dan’s work and I believe he would agree that if it’s wood he can work it to your needs. I can give you’re his number, Ill send you a PM. I have put two of you guns in his hands, and I have not been disappointed.
