What caliber for extra barrels on a 470?
      #177031 - 12/03/11 10:26 PM

I am moving forward on a project and would like your input. If you had a 470 double, and were going to make an extra set of barrels, what caliber would they be in? I am already going to do a set of shotgun barrels so that is not a choice, but my pick so far is a scoped set of .375 Flanged. Thoughts??
John

I agree with Lancaster, 9.3 X 74R . Brass and bullets are available and cheap ( compared to the .375 Fl.).

Let me add that this is an English rifle, .303, .300 H&H?? I do like the 9.3 but was thinking English to stay with its heritage.

My thought was to have a gun which would be able to do almost anything you needed it for. Big game, plains game, small game. The new rifle barrels will be scoped.

Remember the weight of the bbls. with a .470 action , the small cal. bbls. will be very heavy. The .375 FL. or 9.3 maybe as small as practical, otherwise you will end up with a 13 pound .303 ? I would talk to a gunmaker who has some experience with this. Just my "2 cents". Good luck.

I like the .375 flanged. That would give you great versatility with the gun and keep the British pedigree. .450/400 another possibility.

9,3x74r

I would prefer 450.3-1/4 NE instead of 470NE, but that is another question (more bullets and a straight case, smaller action etc.)

.400/.350 regulated for 310 grain Woodleighs. One of John Taylor's all time favorites, and you can use the same ammunition in your Rigby magazine rifle (if you should happen to have one). Cases easily made from 9.3X74 brass.

And what could be more English and versatile than the good old .303. You already have the .470 so don't need another DG cartridge for that gun. Plenty of loads around for the .303 from 130gr to 215gr with this venerable cartridge having taken every species of game in the Commonwealth & Africa, and probably most other parts of the World too. Shot a beautiful Holland and Holland hammer double while in Germany in the .303 British cartridge so there is no shame in having this cartridge for your double.

I think I'll sign on and say .303 also. With this added to your rifle you've got all you bases covered.

Paradox barrels sound great!

I think the best 'All around kit' would be a set of cape barrels, with a jug-choked 12bore barrel and a rifle barrel in anything in the 300H&H to 9.3mm range - with QD scope mount.

That would cover everything (else) aside the .470

With hotrod ball loads it's a close-up soft-skinned animal smasher, with shot it's good for bird stew at camp, with the medium caliber barrel it's good for shooting to however far off you want to shoot -- and with a sub-caliber insert in the 12bore barrel you have rimfire or hornet or whatever suits your fancy for small game.

Pretty much covers everything.
Double DG rifle with a full-kit answer for everything else you'd want to hunt.

For ultra-style points, you can have the 12bore barrel done in Damascus, either from a new-old-stock barrel blank forging or from Damasteel.
The additional cost for the material wouldn't cost too terribly much more than otherwise, considering the full-suite cost of the rig.
Have it cased, have tools made to load the specialty shotshells, don't look back.

Cheers
Tinker

Paradox barrels would be great, but who makes them other than Holland? With the barrel wall thickness on Fosberry style being over .090 in the muzzles, suitable barrels to be rifled would be difficult to find. Any orphan Fosberry barrels out there??!!

On the rifle caliber, I am leaning towards the .375 Flanged magnum withe the .303 next. With the .375 scoped you can still shoot big game and my eyes are fading....

I just think that the action will be a bit on the large side for .375 and .303
Along the lines of the above, the .500/.416 would be a good option too.

The action is not overly large, with the breech face measuring 2.23". The butt stock and rear action weighs exactly 4 pounds. With the 470 barrels, the weight is 10.1 pounds. The barrels are a short 21" as it was made for a maharaja.
I am also pursuing the Paradox barrels.
Thx

Having seen this wonderfull example of English sublime design and execution, I can say the new barrels MUST be in an English chambering. My thought is to stick with the .375 flanged. It's too big for the .303, and the 9.3 is a Continental entry.

450/400 would be another that would fit the bill.

I had a 470 with a set of 360#2 barrels for awhile. I loved the 360#2 BUT the action was too wide for a proper fit and the rifle was heavier as a 360 than as a 470. Also a bit awkward in handling.

While a .375 or smaller caliber may sound enticing the practicality of actually building it would make it a heavy and unbalanced tool.

I think you would need to use a caliber that was similar in base dimension and thus keep the barrels at a reasonable weight.
