"Knock your hat off!" - photos from the Feb 2011 shoot
      #177019 - 12/03/11 07:14 PM

Some photos from the Feb 2011 shoot of the new BGRC SA club.

The "Knock Your Hats Off Shoot!"

David the club branch President shooting his .600 Nitro Express!

These photos are from the Category 3 Big Bore shoot comp and also an informal shoot of a couple of rifles after the day's competition.

The other competitor (sorry I haven't learned everyone's name yet!) shooting a .505 Gibbs in the comp.

It was a tie!

David, again looses his hat with the .600 Nitro Double.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of others using the .600.

David is a slim gentleman. For big bores sometimes a bit of gravitas is useful.

Looks like great fun. I really wonder what's the recoil with that .505 Gibbs like. David must be a very brave man.

David's shooting a .600 NE. I had a shot of it too, but no photo. I found the recoil similar to the .505 Gibbs. Have to do the sums and see what the recoil difference is.

Got to be at least some benefit to having more weight to move under recoil!

Just go`s to show that the lack of a super quick follow up shot with the .600 would spell the death of you in a 'missed first shot' situation in close quarters charging!

Gryphon , I think that is true in some ways , some shooters get back on target faster than others , I like big bores myself , but admit 450/400 level you can stay dead on , 500NE & up it gets harder at my weight level (85Kg) , but if you hit em with a 500NE up , may well not need that shot LoL !

My 577's left barrel look's almost unfired !

.505 Gibbs

Bullet weight - 525 grs
Velocity - 2300 fps
Powder weight - 110 grs
Gun weight - 11 lbs

Recoil energy 78 foot pounds
Recoil velocity 21 fps

.600 NE

Bullet weight - 900 grs
Velocity - 1950 fps
Powder weight - 110 grs
Gun weight - 14 lbs

Recoil energy 103 foot pounds
Recoil velocity 22 fps

Guesstimates on the parameters.

Since shooting the .600 NE myself, I've been feeling a real desire to own a .600 in the future. Might be an impossible dream, pricewise at least.

Previously the largest I thought I'd prefer was a .577 but the .600 was quite manageable. At least I thought so from one shot!

What does the Ladies and Gentlemen of NE think? In terms of the largest calibres practically useful?

The .505 Gibbs is a "London Guns" rifle.

Who made the .600NE, NitroX?

Until now I'd have expected most rifles in that calibre to be hammerless. I see the raised foresight, though, reportedly indicating a smokeless cartridge.

John,
You can just manage to fit a 577 NE into a Ruger #1, a cheaper way to have a bigger bore, but for a 600 I think you'd either have to go with a double, or maybe one of the really big FBW single shot actions, if you could ever find one.

Or maybe we could get someone to hang a new barrel on a H&R Handi-Rifle in 600 NE?

Regards,
David.

So what are your thoughts on a .500J in a ~9 lbs (4.5kg) synthetic stocked rifle?

The .600 Nitro Express was a Webley & Scott, double rifle and yes it did have hammers.

At first I wondered if it was originally NfB then remembered the .600 NE never was anything other than smokeless.

I have a H&R/New England Handi-Rifle in 500NE 3 1/4 , it is a bit of a hand full with full Nitro 570Gr loads , I use 50/140,500BPE loads now !

There was the "kamikaze" video a number of years ago world "premiered" on NE of a member shooting his .600 NE handgun.

Dangerous at both ends, I think! Still on NE, I think in the Ezine section - videos. Otherwise search for "kamikaze".

I like the idea of a double in anything over a .500. To me two barrels in a big bore, really achieves what was is looking for. A stopper with a lot of grunt, for close shooting, on wounded or game in thick bush. One barrel just doesn't make the grade, and a bolt still has to be cycled.

Good except for the inevitable price!
