Bullet weights for the .375 what best?
      #17637 - 06/08/04 04:00 PM

Of the commercially available ammo for the .375, which bullet weight, 270 gr. or 300 gr. is better? My personally felling is that the bigger slightly slower bullet would be best; however what is your experience in the field? Thanks to all in advance

My favorite is the 300gr. Swift. I have shot Impala at 20 paces, and Sable at 300yds and buffalo in between... Not to mention my wife borrowed my trusty Sako Safari .375 to bust her buffalo bull at a mere 12yds with a 300 grn Swift @ 2600fps. and we recovered it under the skin on the off side shoulder, and it weighs 278.5grns!450Dakota

All the bullet weights are great in the .375, from the light 235 all the way to the heavy 350; that is the beauty of the cartridge. Not to mention every conceivable bullet design and construction. I have a double that regulates with every bullet weight and I plan on using it every game except prairie dogs and elephants. Need to get it scoped someday.

I favor the 300 grain bullets due to the higher section density, hence better penetration.

I'm thinking of using the Rhino 350 grain bullet in 375H&H this year. And a friend will be using the 380 grain.

I've been reasonably happy with the 300 grain TBBC and Swift A-frames, but would like to go even a bit heavier and slower.

Does anyone here have any experiance with these bullets/weights?

Erik D.

I've just tried the 350 woodleigh PP in my double. I had small evidence of pressure with 70gr of H414. Will back off the load to 68gr or 69gr and test. But apart from that they shot to the same POI as my 300gr bullets.

I know Ray has some loads for the 350 gr. I'm sure others do also. also http://www.reloadersnest.com/index.asp is a good place to look as well.

My absolute favorite is the Woodleigh 300 gn round nose solid.
It is a very stable and efficient projectile especially when it comes to brain shots.
Very good penetration which is what it is all about.

Lotts of great bullets for the .375..With conventional bullets I love the Woodleigh 300 gr. PP, the 350 gr. PP or RN, the Northforks cannot be beat and the 300 gr. Woodliegh is a super killer...

Below 300 grs, say 250 to 270 grs., I want a monolithic HP, like a GS Customs, Barnes XXX, Failsafe or such...that will give you equal any of the 300s and perhaps a bit more trajectory...

At any rate any of the above will fair you well, if you toss in a few Northfork Flatnose solids for the dagga boys, elephants and hippos...

The new Northfork cup points sure killed 4 buffalo for me well last week, and helped out on a couple of more in both 470 and 404..man that cup point is one hell of a buff bullet deluxe...The best I have ever used.

Ray I take it you took your “new” 404 built on the CZ 550? How did the rifle perform? I finally got my 550 safari in a few weeks ago and we glassed her last week I’m off to the gun shop and range on Saturday or Sunday to mount the VX-III 1.76-6 and fire the first rounds. I have to say that the stock was very well straightened, and seemed about boom proof. Ill let you know how it goes.

PS very glad to hear you had a great hunt Africa!

The rifle performed well as expected, it is extremely accurate due to the Lothar Walther barrel I suspect...It shoots under an inch...I used the North fork 380 gr. softs and their experimental cup point solid, an expanding solid so to speak and thats one hell of a bullet on buffalo..I recovered about 6 of them from lengthwise shots with full penitration from stem to stern. Off the 6 I only recovered one 404 cup point and one soft nose, the rest went through and away..I recovered 5 470s that I was driving 2020 FPS, so velocity does play a big part with these bullets, drive them as fast as you want...
