Hunting with a flintlock pistol??
      #175821 - 19/02/11 11:23 PM

Hello all.

Oh, these black power, muzzleloading thing have gotten the hang of me

It is great. So, hunting with a flintlock pistol, some who do it?
I guess the round ball will be effective from a pistol to, just have to get closer than one have to with a rifle.

Hope to hear from some who hunt with these old pistol style.

Ballistically speaking, and out to 50 yards, a .54 cal. 8" to 10" barreled flint pistol capable of firing 55 to 70gr. of 3F with a .530" or .535" patched ball will work just fine on moose or elk with proper hits.

It's ballistics will rival a S&W.44 mag with 4" or 5" barrel loaded to the nuts - but, it wil have but one shot until it is reloaded. Best to carry two.

This is a Wheellock - German Dag of around 17th century in design - although of older design is more accurate and quicker firing than any flintlock in it's prime.

Very nice, Daryl. Do you hunt with them? I'd love to see some pictures of game you've taken with them.

Illegal here to hunt with a handgun. Are they capable, only the flintlock due to calibre. Legal, no - only for target shooting at rondy. The Dag is unbeatable.

With Pleasure, Tinker and Vegard
The quartz, held in the jaws of the 'dog', sits on the cover plate. Upon touching the set trigger, the plate slides back exposing the pan's contents and the quartz then touches the wheel under the priming powder, the wheel spins 3/4's turn, creating sparks which ignites the pan pownder which flash ignites the powder in the barrel through the vent hole. It happens seemingly instantaneously, much faster than a flint - about the aspeed as a cap lock, actually- and is quieter than either.

Yes - it's one of Taylors. It is amazingly accurate but due to the wierd grip shape and angles, takes a bit of getting used to. Although only a .40, it will easily hold about 6" at 100 yards. The lock is entirely hand made - by Taylor as are the furnature pieces and sterling silver guard and sterling silver inlays, butt cap and everything else. The stock is ebony - what a job inletting - as hard as the back of God's hand(so to speak). The barrel was a 1" octagonal blank to start with, I think - or might have been 1" round - I don't remember.

WOW

What a pistol!
Great craftsmanship. Guess the grip is not as a modern revolver. But, what a cool pistol.
How long is it? Guess it it large compared to a modern revolver, massive.

Oh, I can`t take my eyes of it. Dam....

Thanks for showing

Vegard

This Dag could be around 22" long. The barrel is 14", I think. Weight - 3 or 4 pounds?

Pleasure, Sarg - Taylor says I'm his best promoter. This gun was most difficult to build, due to the wood. The gun holds steady due to the long barrel giving muzzle weight - just as it should. Ignition is eaual with the serated wheel and quartz, as it is with the smooth wheel and flint. The 'Dog' that holds the flint does not strike the wheel - it merely sits on it in the priming, or on top of the the cover over the priming until the trigger is pulled, or touched if set. It is a single set trigger of his design.

I don't know how heavy the gun actually is, just that it's not too much for one hand, is all.

Yes - he is a craftsman.

Just a few more.

The last one, was from a $600.00(or more) Proctor Kit, that wasn't scale enough - too many parts missing, and too many not good enough. This one has aluminum ammo feed chutes along with the hold for the empties to fall out the bottom of the aircraft. The pilots hands move on the stick as the radio controls are worked, as do his feet on the rudder pedals. With many 'extra' hours of painstaking work designing and making the proper parts in 1/4 scale, it is now a Museum or World Class 1/4 Scale DVA, with, copied from a German Ace's plane.

This has to be one of the most interesting forums around, Daryl, it wouldn´t surprise me if that plane had a working machine gun best, Mike
