No frills double.
      #175226 - 10/02/11 03:18 PM

Greetings to you all from South Africa! I know that this is one of the most difficult questions to answer, I have tried all the double rifle retailer links, but can anyone point me in the right direction for a NO FRILLS, everyday work, double in either .416, 458, or 470 NE for use by a PH. Do you think that it is better to surf endlessly until you find a good deal, or approach a gunsmith to build one? Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Sorry, this was not meant to offend any of you fine gentlemen or your beautiful firearms that I have stared at for hours on end on this site, this is more of a job requirement thing, I already have a great .458, but would now like to upgrade, and own a double (also helps to look the part!! lol), this will be an ongoing project, and as I can afford it I will slowly upgrade, and one day when I'm all grown up I will also own a gorgeous double like some of the ones I have seen here.

Thanks.

How No frills ?

Ever thought of buying a Sabatti from Cabela's in the US ?

Might suggest you get it checked out first before buying
to make sure you get a good one.

Check out the threads on the AR Double Rifle forum.

One of the last threads is much better, less flaming
and has succinct posts re the one's with problems.

Not all had problems !!! but you need to pick which one you buy.

Thank you so much, that Sabatti looks very nice! Fortunately, I don't have to stuff around with South African licensing, as I work in Zambia, so the rifle will ship to there YAY!:) Much easier! Thanks once again 500Nitro! (wish I could afford a 500!)

Hi Powdersmoke,

All the guy's have given you sound advice, If I said to you to close your eyes and pay an lesser amount, would you not be happy.??? If the answer was YES, then Sabatti is the answer, truthfully they are the cheapest "New" Double Rifle that I can find as after a divorce, I had to or I would not have been able to afford a D.R.

Forget the current finish, and if that is not to your liking, leave it uncleaned after a shower of rain and then you will have a "Shitty" looking new rifle.

Of all the D.R. manufacturers that I have seen advertising there wares, Sabatti "IS" the cheapest and based on the A$ you can have your .500 Nitro or any of the larger calibers. I got a .450 N.E. 3.25" but if you want to go even cheaper, then go for one of the Sabatti's in 9.3x74 and load it up to the .375H&H spec's.

If you can get them from the states it is cheaper than here in Australia. They have in recent times just added the .450-400 about 3-6 months after I bought my D.R. but I guess that's life.

I am not trying to be nasty, but you seem to think that they are expensive for whatever reason. I will close by saying the only thing you will possibly need to do is replace the recoil pad which is as useless as the tit's on your male Buffalo's.

Oh, I forgot one thing, Once you have decided on the caliber you want, make sure that the ammunition that is available at your end is the "Brand" that the rifle was regulated with. In my case it was regulated with Kynamco which is not available in Australia a point that I made clear with the Australian agent AND Sabatti. They are now using other brands like Norma & Hornady which was a better choice in Australia.

Good luck, you will find it a worthy choice,

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

A Sabatti 500NE with ejectors is $5500 USD at CABELLAS. (You may be able to source them in Europe cheaper.)
Most have been happy with theirs but there are a couple of noteable exceptions.

Luckily most are happy with their rifles Jeff! I hope that Cabellas send the bad ones back to Italy for fresh tubes.

You could also get a used Krighoff (assuming you don´t mind the cocking system thingy) for about US$6k I reckon in Europe, maybe $5k, best, Mike

Thanks a lot for your help guys, I really appreciate it! Factory ammo for the doubles here is F!@#$%^&^%$#@!g expensive if you can get it, so with the volume of rounds that will have to go through it as a working gun, my thought was to reload my own, I have been reloading for all my other calibers for some time now, and I feel that I am fairly competent. My question: Is it that much more difficult loading for these NE rounds if the correct powders, and projectiles are available, obviously I have never loaded any "BIG BOY" ammo other than the .458, so I am naturally cautious. 2nd Question: would both the .470, and the .500 be capable of banging out projectiles of between 400-500gr solids, and softs (I understand that some doubles are limited in projectile grainage, this is more of a general question) at around 1900-2100 fps? Sorry if these are simple questions, but I'd rather know now than when I have to bounce an angry Mbogo, or Ele!

Thanks again.

Powdersmoke.

IMHO, they are easier to load for than smaller rounds.

Big bores are a bit more forgiving, subject to the DR not being overly sensitive (to minor grain variations or powder lots)

Doubles are only limited in projectile grainage because of regulation. That's NOT to say you couldn't get a slightly heavier round to shoot but why would you ? The rounds have worked well for years as they are.

470 yes, they have a set bullet weight, a 500 Nitro uses a 570gn projjie.

The velocity you are after is easily achieved. You should aim for 2050 - 2150. Partly depends on the DR but 1900 fps is too slow a MV in my HO.

I would go 470 Nitro first, 500 Nitro second.

Loading a 470 to the magic 2100fps is simple. But Hornady is offering "sort of" reasonable priced ammo also.

I took a different route, found an old double that needed work and am having it rebuilt. I expect to have a working gun for about $2,000.

I just don't have $5,000 to put into a single rifle, so there really isn't any other option for me.

What is your price point?
Can you live with a O/U?
Can you live with a 450-400?

Buddy, that is the route that I would love to go, but buying a second hand double here in South Africa......... no such thing! I would love to buy one elsewhere, but how do I check to see if it is at least shootable? Tough one, working gun for $2000-00 that is the way to go, well done!

My pricing point is about $4-4500, I would prefer to have a side by side, and I am not familiar with a 450-400, I need to do my homework a bit! Still in the starting phase of this project, but you guys are doing all the work for me, thanks for your straight, honest answers, it really helps.

Regards.
