400 gr Frontier Bullets in 416
      #175073 - 08/02/11 06:21 AM

Has anyone had any experience with the 400gr Frontier bullets made in Africa.
I have come by 100 of these in 416grs cheaply and was wondering what they are like.

I believe they make a number of different types of projectile. The Spartan is a monolithic.

Con was at little river on the weekend and they had a few different calibres of frontier ammo in the store. Picked up 100 400gr 416 Game Rangers for $65.00. Thought they may be okay for playing around with the 416 Ruger.

Did a bit of reloading and testing on the weekend .
The best 400gr frontier load I got using my chrony was an average velocity of 2385fps from the 20" barreled Ruger Alaskan . Load was 78 grs 2208 fed 215m primer. There was no sign of pressure or hard bolt opening etc. This was a safe load in my rifle with this particular design bullet. Work up to it in your rifle if you want to use it. The frontier bullet has a 2 diametre tip. The first .400" of the bullet tapers to .410" then has a shoulder which steps up to .416" This gives a bit of a jump into the bore before the full diameter reaches the bore. I would imagine this was designed this way to help keep the pressure down. Seems to work okay.
From a 20" barreled .416" I am fairly happy with the velocity now just need to try it on game.

G'Day Fella's,

Big Jedd, I have been shooting them (300gr FMJ) through my .375 H&H for some time now.
I'm just trying to remember the Australian agent that I purchased them from?

I will go have a look when I get a chance and get back to you.
Just had a thought, I'm sure the details are on their website that Tophet1 provided.

Yep, just went there for a look and Greg Moon is their Australian Agent!

Doh!

Homer have you used the 300grs on any animals or just paper.
I would be interested in their performance on game.
I was browsing a web site and there was a discussion on them. One hunter said they dont perform real well on large game like buffalo but were good for smaller thin skinned game and cheap for target and plinking.

G'Day Fella's

Big Jedd, and every body else, Frontier make a variety of different bullets!

I read that these Total Metal Jacketed bullets had the copper jacket, electroplated to the lead core.
I stuck one of the 300 grainers in the milling machine and started removing copper until the lead core was reached.
If I remember correctly, the jacket was only 0.015" thick.
Now I wouldn't recommend that these particular bullets be used on any large dangerous game but as you say, on smaller game they should be fine?
No Jedd I haven't shot and critters with them but I would imagine (given the jacket THINNESS) they might Rivet Up a bit, if they hit some resistance, like a pigs shoulder bones???

As to accuracy, they shoot as well as any other pill I've tried in the .375!
The only real draw back, is the nose profile of these particular bullets.
They could best be described as Semi-Wadcutters and as such, they may not feed reliably out of some a box magazine rifles?

These particular Frontiers really are good value for the money and just the ticket for Big Game Rifle competitions etc! Unfortunately, they don't make any in 0.423" and according to the factory they won't be! Bugger!!!

Hope that helps
