Mid to late 1800's aperture sights
      #174956 - 06/02/11 07:57 AM

Hello Folks,

My Zihn one-ounce gun (16 bore muzzleloading rifle) is packed up to ship back to Steve. He's going to fit an aperture rear sight. As accurate as the gun is, my eyes won't accomodate the open rear sight in the woods. Some of you might have photos of period British guns with aperture rear sights. Would you mind sharing them?

Take care, Tom

That's too bad, Tom. I sure like the wide open V sights, but they are becoming more diffcult to see year by year.

This is just a tiny bead, yet it shows up well in the bush as-on my couch back. For apure hunting sight for this 14 bore rifle, I'd have a full .10" or even .125" (1/8"). the wide V seems to work longer (eyesight-wise) than a narrow V or U sight with blade. The top of the rear sigth becomes very blurred and the sight blade is also blurred. There tops become indistinct and elevation impact suffers. With a wide V, these problems largely disappear and the bead, while it might be a bit fuzzy, the ball hits in the middle of the fuzzy bead - a rather exact point of impact, not a by-chance impact.
