New Project begins. 1974 Ruger No.1
      #174523 - 31/01/11 08:43 PM

I have just purchased a second hand late 1974 by the Serial Number, Ruger No.1 in .270 Win. Although it needs work, the basis of a fine Custom Rifle is hiding in there somewhere ready to blossom with a little T.L.C.

I am yet to decide if it should stay in the same caliber, as the other rifles I have range from .22, .222, 30.06,.375H&H(x2) & .450 N.E. 3.25"

What are the suggestions from our Forum members, Boy, I love this Forum.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Nice, Jeff! I think having something in the works becomes rather addictive, after awhile... all those dreams and decisions. I'm sure that Alex would be only too happy to turn it into a .500 or .577 for you! Have fun deciding!

Hi Ben,

Your right on, very addictive and Yes, I have some feelers out about the next stage. Alex seems to have perfected the Safety Catch problem owning four of them but I am still looking for input as to caliber etc, it won't be like the CZ's but will have the stock refinished and re blued after the safety issue but your right about Alex and what he could do but the last time I heard Bank Robbery was illegal.. Ha Ha... No, I think a clean and tidy work horse but if I changed caliber, it could be a .270 Weatherby, .270 Howel, .270 Gibbs but have a look at the .270x64

With that wood,a 6.5x55,leather cover pad,a little color caseing here and there would be nice...

I for one will be folowing your proress with some interest, kindly keep us up to date and include pics of your progress. Great looking piece of wood - are you planning on changing the stock / just freshen it up? As far a calibre, should you decide to change , a 6.5 would go good in your line up. ---- John303.

Hi John303,

It will be a freshen up all over with a little change here and there, well that's the thought at the present. Do you mean the 6.5x55 ?

Hi Phillip,

You also mention the 6.5x55 is that the Normal or the Improved ?

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Well Jeff there are quite a few 6.5s available, probably the 6.5x55 is the most common, just off hand x54, x57, x06, 264 win. mag come to mind. Something in a 6.5xwhateverR would be complementary to the gun. Availability of ammo. would be one of my prime considerations, nothing against wildcats mind you but I just can't be bothered. --- John303.

Jeff, so glad you bought it. I was first in line but passed on it as I didn't want asnother project at the moment, just something completely original to use and maybe do something later. But an early 270 1A I was sorely tempted.

Good luck with it and keep s posted as to progress.

Best wishes, Chris

Jeff, the figure in that buttstock nearly changed my mind, really nice for a factory stock.

Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris,

I agree, very nice figure, it just needs a re do on the stock and bluing.

Hi Gryphon,

I am starting to think that way, leave it as a .270 Win, no problem with factory rounds if I get stuck but it does need a clean up. Neil said that the trigger has been worked as is very nice.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

The .270 with light (130grain) pills certainly fills a niche in your armourey.

I'll support keeping it a .270 if it shoots well. You can then re-furb and 'pimp it' with some subtle engraving or colour case hardening. The flat receiver sides on No1's almost scream to be engraved.

Hi Chris,

I agree fully to the point that the firearm as you know is in Melbourne and so is Ross Waghorn so Neil, the gentleman selling the rifle is going to get Ross to do the transfer and he will then do the stock re finish whilst it is down there. In that way it is in safe hands until the PTA arrives and then a little metalwork on the safety & bluing then it can come home.

Tophet1,

I was just on the Federal Premium website and was looking at exactly that, a 130gn TSX and the .270 seems to have a nice trajectory. I know that they are expensive but the amount that I would use is more than offset in buying dies & cases etc. As for the engraving, well maybe one day but I will have to let the bank balance build up after the other projects. I already have the artwork that I was going to use on a No.1 a lot of years ago that was done by Bruce Dean in his heyday.

Cheers for now Fellas,

Jeff Gray

Hmmm, non-buyers remorse already listening to this talk The earlier actions were the best cf recent ones. I'm glad a member here bought it.

As I said, looking forward to seeing progress reports Jeff.

Best wishes and good hunting, Chris

Hi RockDoc,

I only became interested after running the Serial Number, then checking under the bed as to the amount of $$ there.... Just Joking and when Neil's phone went to voice mail and then I had to wait for him to come home to answer the Email I was starting to think that I lost it....

I will let you know as it progresses but it is only going to be a redo and will stay mostly original for now until I win Lotto or some-thing but it is in safe hands.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Jeff,
Nice score on that No1 mate. I'm sure she will come up very nicely with just a bit of a tidy up.
I also agree that the old 270W is a very good cartridge with the right bullets loaded.
Some of the best long range pig killing that I can remember, was with a 270, 130 grain PP Woodleighs, and a Brno ZG47.
That was on stubble in west Qld, shooting over the bonnet of my Toyota.

Your Ruger stock has some nice figure, and it is going to really look great after Ross W works his magic on it!

Hi 4seventy,

Yes, Ross does work magic, I believe that he is probably the best in his field and I always feel that when his / my generation retires, a lot of the knowledge will be lost forever. I don't know how Geoff Slee is going health wise now but he is another one in the same age / experience bracket.

We can all only hope that they can continue for a lot of years to come.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

MY REFERENCE IS THE SWED 6.5X55..I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT "NORMAL" ,I NO LONGER HAVE ANY USE FOR INPROVED,WILDCATS,ECT....HOWEVER, WITH THAT SAID,MY ALL TIME KILLING CALIBER HAS BEEN THE .270 WITH 130&150 PARTITIONS,50+ HEADS OF STUFF....

SOMEONE DEFINE "NORMAL"

Hi Kamilaroi,

I guess that you do not agree with my statement but I am not a gossip columnist and am not concerned that you do not agree with me. This is my belief based on the work that he has done for me and my friends. Yes, they may communicate with each other but again this is my belief and I would recommend him to any-one wanting a first class job. This is not to say that there are no other stock makers in Australia that could do an equal quality job but a recommendation based on his proven results with myself and my friends.

Here is another with some trimmings on UG`s

Older model rifle in immaculate condition with beautiful timber stock. Perfectly fitted ivory and buffalo horn inlays under forend and buffalo horn forend tip. Bluing perfect, adjustable trigger, has seen little work. Leupold rings and 4x33 Leupold M8 USA scope also in excellent condition. Rifle will not disappoint

Hi Gryphon,

Yep I saw it, very nice but a later model, I think about 1989 with that serial number. I would have given serious thought but a day or so to late to matter.

Hi Jeff,
I'm re-working a 1978 #1 rifle now also. It was origionally a 7X57 1A and I'm going to install a 458WM pipe then rechamber it to 450NE.
It was scheduled to be a 500 NE but Because several of us got scammed by the former member 'Richhere' it was put on the back burner until I found a good deal on a factory 458 barrel. Luckily I'm set to load either caliber!
Now it's underway again.
